nope.. greencard is halfway to citizenship.
with GC, u still are Indian citizen, hold Indian passport, but don't require any kind of visa to enter USA, work in USA.
Citizenship is surrendering ur Indian passport.

interesting stuff arch and others ... keep it coming.

i have another question: apart from indians, hundreds of immigrants become citizens every day - we ourselves run into so many persons of chinese, european or latino origin who have become naturalized citizens. any idea how they feel about relinquishing their earlier citizenship (i know a lot of countries do have dual citizenship, but im sure there are several who do not) ?

i would like to raise an issue that is not a direct consequence of this discussion, but the talk about naturalized citizenship also brings to the fore the reaction that indians are having to the idea of sonia gandhi becoming prime minister. in some sense, her situation is no different from arch's or lalu's or that of iowa representative swati dandekar or arnold schwarzenegger for that matter.

arch/lalu - how would u feel if you (as a naturalized citizen of the US) were not accorded the same privileges as those granted to your kids for example? i believe the US constitution does not allow for a naturalized citizen to be president, so does the junta believe we shoudl have a similar rule in india/? and if so, a) why stop at PM or president and b) why allow naturalization in the first place?

a tangential thread i agree ... my apologies for the same - feel free to delete it or move it elsewhere if its not appropriate here ... just wanted to put a couple of current issues on the table thats all
