Namu, problem is not with firewire card but with VCD format. When you connect cam to TV directly you are feeding signal directly without any extra encoding.
On the other hand when you upload video stream to PC using firwire/usb you are digitizing the data and then converting into VCD which is using comparatively lossy format. So quality is bound to drop.

Try burning SVCD (if your player supports it) or DVD and check quality

Hi,
i have transfered a video from camcorder on my PC which is of almost 7 GB. I needed help to figure out how to burn this on a CD in a format which won't deteriorate the quality of the picture. I tried burning it as a VCD directly where the burning software(NERO) takes care of the encoding and converts it into a video of 300 MB.... but the quality is lost
is there a better way to do this.

check up vcdhelp.com and try different format such as SVCD (works only with Sony players and PC) or DVD.

1 hour shoot eka VCD madhe basto. kahich problem nahi, but it is mpeg2 (or 3?)
if you want Mpeg4, there are different softwares available such as pinnacle video editing... or sony video editing (exact naav visarlo), pan VCD t quality degrade honarach karan tyacha frames/second ha rate khupach kami asto.
another option to overcome this is to keep the video in DivX format which reduces the size but not the quality (very less degradation compared to vcd) and also there are codecs available to watch DivX on computer but panasonic (even sony?) has a dvd player that plays DivX.

Savya.. If possible experiment with MPEG-2 format.. It is time consuming but results are rewarding. Assuming you are in india as of now, it won't be difficult to find not so expensive SVCD player. I'll strong;y disocurage using VCD.

Tip: Try not buring CD upto maximum limit.

Can everyone post here their camcorder models (also where did you buy that, model no. varies region to region) along with reasons to buy that specific model.
I am looking into these camcorders for quiet a while now but still can't make up my mind on any.

If my understanding is right, what I am looking for is highest possible resolution with highest possible optical zoom, light requirement of zero lux so that I will be able to shoot in complete darkness.
I am finding it bit difficult to understand 'lines of resolution', video storage options, like media and video format. What anything else I should look for.
Inputs are welcome.

Kiran,
If I am not wrong, in last 2 weeks a verdict was passed to ban all DVD duplicator programs to prevent piracy.

Kiran, this software is simple DVD ripper bundled with encoder for DIVx format. Thats it. It may be btter in terms of processing and handling ripping process.

My experience is on standard configuration process is time consuming albait uncomplicated as far as ripping concerned. you need to experiment with different software to decide which suits you. My personal choice is TMpeg Encoders. Mind you you need lot of free space (Rule of thumb so far has been 2 * size of DVD + Swap space)

As far as encoding into DIVx etc is concerned, it really depends upon format of your source and target files. If you are performing complex task such as converting NTSC DIVx to PAL MPeg-2, process it self is cryptic due to the need of seperate handling of audio and video streams, multiplexing and de-multiplexing them together. Concepts are quite simple to comprehend but processing takes time in such cases. If you are planning to have some hands on, I'll encourage you to read vcdhelp.com as it gives you more than you need before you even start.

Prasad,

I have sony's TRV30 (quite an old one... now I guess they have much better, superseding models, but this one had the best digital still picture resolution 1360x1020!!! ). You might want to check this link:

http://www.circuitcity.com/searchresults.jsp?c=1&b=g&department=Cameras+and+Camcorders&category=Camcorders&first=yes&sort=TopSellers

When I bought one, this site helped me choose different models and compare their configurations as well as prices. You just have to select the ones that are the best fit for your needs and compare them.

Hope this helps.

Prasad, in addition to the features you've mentioned above, I'd also check :
1) Viewfinder - is it color or b/w?(since some camcorders come with b/w viewfinder)
2) Image stabilization (it should be standard now.. but some don't have it) - this lets you get a steady shot even if you are, say, moving in a car for example
3) LCD size
4) Battery life
5) Manual focus (if interested)
6) USB, IEEE 1394 and software to transfer and edit video on your PC.
7) Digital still picture storage (memory stick/sd card/...)
8) Date - time display.
9) Digital picture effects. (transition effects etc to make your video more interesting.)
10) Remote control.

I am planning to carry a camcorder as a gift to India from US.

Most of the camcorders used in US are suited to US televisions in NTSC TV format; but we have PAL systems in India. So which SONY models (solely PAL or any other models) can I think of buying? Experts, please inform me asap about this because the websites do not give this information ?

marathi shrota, why don't u read this BB completely right from the archives?

anyways, Most indian tvs/vcrs can play both ntsc and pal. u need not worry about whether to buy cam with PAL. but if u really want, visit any indian shop nearby and there u will surely find couple of PAL cams.

Thanks Savya, I read through all of the information in the BB. Also I did a mini-research before buying the camcorder and confirmed that most of the new TV models in India play on both ntsc and pal devices. After enough of deliberation, I bought Sony DCR TRV 460. It is a bang for the buck! It is working with great results here and I am sure it would not give any problems backhome. I also visited the sony India website and found that the same model is in the "NEW section" on the website. I was surprised to see the price given on the website in INR was 36000/-. Never can a middle class person in India can think of the goddamn techno-piece at this moment. Thanks to God for being in Uncle Sams land (just for purchasing electronics...... :-) ).

Asami, We have DCR TRV 520 with a i.Link (Firewire, IEEE1394, et al) i/o connection.
If I buy a Firewire card, which other software do I need to transfer my Camcorder shooting into AVI/DAT/MPEG format? can i directly upload it into mpeg-2 format so that I can burn DVD out of it?

Kiran..

You need some capturing software like Pinnacle studio , Windows movie maker (I think it comes with Win XP) or MGI videowave. Also make sure the compatibility of Firewire card with your PC motherboard. I had some problems with my card and the mother board (some interrupt issue). So I bought a card of diff make and then it worked.

For MPEG recording you need a plug-in in your VCD maker software (NERO Platinum etc)

I recently made lots of VCD's using following procedure.
1) I have Panasonic Mini DV camcorder. I captured the video using MGI video wave. It came with my Firewire card.
2) I then used NERO express CD burning software to create VCD's. If you need to create SVCD's you need MPEG plugin, which comes in NERO Platinum edition.

Just a note : I tried both Pinnacle and MGI software's. I am very much happy with the performance of MGI. Pinnacle never worked for me. Also make sure that you have lot of free PC memory and atleast 256 MB RAM. One VCD makes 1 hr of recording.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Boss, Where can I get MGI software? which default format it saves the incoming stream from camcorder?

You said it needs to have MPEG plug-in. Does it mean that it cannot directly save the recording in MPEG format? If plug-in is installed then is it possible to do so?

I have a celeron running Windows ME with 64MB RAM and approx. 8GB of Free hard disk. Is this configuration inadequate to give it a try?

Might sound like stupid question but this question is there in my mind for quite a while.

Everyone says that you need a program to 'capture' video from camcorder. What do you exactly mean by that. I don't know how does this procedure works, so this query came up.
Another question is, no matter what kind of camcorder you have, analog or digital, you save video of different types of tape, is there any camcorder where you can directly store in electronic media (apart from DVD-R and DVD-RAM)
If your storage media is DVD-R/RAM, still you need this 'video capturing' program?

Asami

Kiran with your configuration I'll not try to burn VCD directly streaming from camcorde. Better and faster approach will be to upload stream before burning.

can i directly upload it into mpeg-2 format > >Surely you can do it. As boss mentioned you have to search for right plug-in or software which has in-bulit support. Browse vcdhelp.com to see if anyone has already tried this.

is there any camcorder where you can directly store in electronic media >> Prasad I'm not sure which electronic media you have in mind. Are you referring to CD/DVD etc as oppose to tapes ?

Everyone says that you need a program to 'capture' video from camcorder. What do you exactly mean by that.
>> term 'capture' is in reference with uploading your recorded data on PC from tape so that VCD/SVCD/XVCD/DVD etc could be created for watching on stand-alone player.

If your storage media is DVD-R/RAM, you certainly can play them on compatible player and hnce do not "video capturing"

Is there any cover available in market using which you can use camcorder in water. I don't mean underwater but it can withstand splash like on beach or something like that.
I know canon has such gadget for its digital cameras but never came across any such gadget for camcorder.
Any clue?

Kiran ..

Sorry for delay in replying.

Thanks Boss, Where can I get MGI software? >>> You have to purchase it, it is not free. For me it came with my Firewire cards (adaptec). You can try Windows movie maker, which is free ( i think?). But I heard the video quality is degraded with Windows Movie maker

which default format it saves the incoming stream from camcorder? >> .avi

You said it needs to have MPEG plug-in. Does it mean that it cannot directly save the recording in MPEG format? >>>> NO, it saves in .avi and then you need to convert it in MPEG.

If plug-in is installed then is it possible to do so? >> yes.

I have a celeron running Windows ME with 64MB RAM and approx. 8GB of Free hard disk. Is this configuration inadequate to give it a try? >> I think you will face lot of issues with this config. You will atleast need 256 mb RAM and 5 GB free harddisk space.
