No Idea... But if its MPEG2, then never go for it... MPEG2 quality is very bad... its compressed, you'll never get the DVD quality from MPEG2, DV format is the best as of today.

Hello All, Was looking around on Maayboli if there is anybody who is avid video editor and fancy making professional looking DVDs but I found that here lot of misinformation. So few clarifications, Raahul80 has responded to Manmouji's comment regarding mpeg2. In my opinion, it is wrong comment. Clarification: MPEG2 format is the same as DVD format. DV format is partly compressed raw video. If anybody wants to go right from the basics then video is a sequence of picture frames at rate of 25(PAL) or 29.95(NTSC) frames per second and storing so many picture requires lot of space. The different video formats compress the raw video footage in different sizes and that is the main difference between DV (Digital video) and MPEG2 (Motion PIctures Expert Group 2). DV is 25mbps and MPEG2 max is 8.5mbps (DVD quality) DV stores each and every frame and whereas MPEG2 removes 'unnecessary' part of the frames to compress the video. You can compress MPEG2 video at different compression levels. MPEG2 camcorders DO offer DVD quality video (latest JVC GZ-MG70, the lower models have bad picture quality) but editing is issue at this moment because of the compression technique/algorithm used by MPEG. As far as I know VCD video is MPEG1 stream, may be I am wrong but never concentrated on VCD video as I hate that quality. To answer Shyamli's question, Raahul is right here that its not necessary that drivers would work on XP but then look at programs called WInDV and DVIO, freewares to transfer video using firewire. If you want to record continuously on PC directly using your handycam, give a try to http://www.exsate.com/products/dvcapture/ This is also freeware, captures video right from handycam and saves as compressed file in DivX or Xvid format (Xvid is open source and I prefer it over DivX) The picture quality will not be as good as your original shoot on the tape but it depends how much compression you are doing using Xvid or DivX algorithm. If you compress it to 1000kbps, it should be good quality but don't go below that!! Also depends on which camcorder you have. I find it handy because many a times, you want to shoot just for fun and doesn't need to be that good, so it comes handy. At the same time, if you understand algorithm settings well, you can compress it to near DVD quality video. If you watch it on telly, the resultant file shoudl be fine, as along as you don't watch on HDTV. I got good results using Panasonic GS-250. I would like to interact with anyone who uses Premiere elements or any other similar program for video editing and making professional looking DVDs.

I use this http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/ This is awesome program, you can create professional quality movie with special effects in seconds using this program. I have created few, but they all are family movies so cannot publish it. iLife suite also have a program called as iDVD which can be later used to convert project created in iMovie to a DVD video, supported that you have superdrive attached to your mac. iMovie comes with Themes, which can be applied to sequence of clips to create movie in simple clicks. if you have Quick Time installed, take iMovie tour on http://www.apple.com/ilife/quicktour/imovie/ I also tried using http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/ once, but thats too big program too run on my 14" iBook. I'll at least need an 20" screen monitor to run it.

Totally agree, iLife Suite is awesome program, the only reason why I paid Steve Jobs one more turtle neck!! I like its ability to make slideshows and making the same pictures available as DVD-ROM content so if someone wants to print these pictures, they are available right there on the same DVD. Only thing I miss is subtitle ability for the slideshows which I consider must for every slideshow and so I have started looking at Premiere elements. I don't know if it gives this facility but I am trying to find out. If it does, then I will buy it otherwise I have to find any other alternative. Do you know anyway that I can put subtitle to the video or slideshow in iLife? And Be warned about its ability of handling pseudo 16:9 (cinemascope / letterboxed 4:3) footage. It totally screws up on 4:3 TV because of an error in DVD's IFO file, its fine on 16:9 TV.

never did that, but check this http://producer.mediablab.com/imovie/imovie_subtitles.phtml

The link that you have provided talks about different subtitle option. I am not too sure if it will really help me to make switchable subtitle(s) because as far as I understood, this option is best when you actually want to show the title looking like subtitle so not convering your movie/picture area. Also, you will not be able to use this option if you decide to burn slideshow in iDVD!! I am die-hard fan of Macintosh (but Steve Job's capitalistic attitude drives me mad) I use iMac Globe at work and desperately wanted to buy Powerbook but its so expensive in Sweden that I had not other option but stick to Windows at home but I am trying Ubuntu now before I switch officially to Mac at home. One thing though, it pretty much upsets me when many websites fail to open on Safari and beg for IE.
