हा फोटो माझ्या अहोंनी कढला आहे कॅनबेरा मधल्या National Zoo and Acquarium मधे behind the scenes tour ला गेलो होतो तेव्हा. फोटो झू च्या मॅनेजमेंटला आवडला आणि त्यांनी त्याचे पोस्टर बनवून इथल्या कॅनबेरा विझिटर्स सेंटर मधे लावले.. details: Sumatran tigress - SAMARA shot in the afternoon (August - winter in Australia) shot with Canon EOS 30 - 35mm SLR - hand held through the cage (I had a piece of meat in a tongs and the tigress was just getting up to take it). I recently received an email from Prasad and couple of others over here asking about 'which camera to buy'. Just some notes for you to keep in mind. 1. A small digicam has a very small sensor. 2. More the megapixel count on this tiny sensor, more noise it produces. Thus making high ISO performance poor/noisy. 3. Mega-pixel madness is actually started by consumers and camera makers are smiling. Just check out the prices of greatest digicam of last year. It has gone down by atleast 50%. The market is not stable yet. 4. A small digicam is meant for just that: small prints. You can not get quality of true 35mm film, forget about bigger film used in MF or LF cameras. 5. 5MP is more than enough with such a small sensor. You can make great prints upto 8x10 with proper technique. 6. Instead of getting 'trapped' in this war, get an old EOS3 or F4 with couple of primes and you are ready to make great images, for sure better than what these small cameras can get you. Get a decent scanner and learn scanning. An EOS3/F4+50mm now costs around 400Euro, as much as the latest and greatest 'small digicam' and will allow you to make superb images. 7. If you can affoard then get a Digital-SLR instead. Here too, you don't have to get a 5D or Dx. What do you want to do with this kind of equipment? Make album prints? I know many people who own this kind of expensive equipment and still complain about their 8x10 prints not being sharp. If you are after sharpness, get a 4x5 camera. A decent starter 4x5 kit will cost about 'two small digicams'. Heck, even get a decent TLR. You will be surprised at the quality of prints compared to the 'greatest gizmo' or even your 35mm SLR. 8. Bottomline, get a small digicam with decent pixel count (3-5mp) and better ergonomics if you have to. Use that excess money for a trip to some location, a workshop to enhance your technique.

Hi All, I have put this question in other "looking for" link as well. But this BB seemed to be more active and related to photography. So putting this question again here. I am planning to buy a digital camera. My main requirements are 1. Camera with good optical zoom to click close ups from distance. I have a very young daughter and wants to click some of her Kodak moments . 2. Camera to click good nature photos. I liek to travel a lot. So want good camera for that. I saw two models recently Canon S3 and Olympus 510uz. Can anybody suggest good model out of these or some other good model. SLR is going out my budget so have to go with these models. Thanks, Ajit

Hi Ajit, Personally I am for Canon, as I own a canon A610, and I like the controls a lot. Macro results as well as wide angle with canon have been good. I found the response time a bit slow in auto mode, but I guess that is the difference between SLR and compact camera. So I can definitely say Canon is good. About Olympus, I cannot comment as i have not used any olympus camera. Though i wont encourage it too much, having a look at Sony DSC-H2 could be a good idea too. Also, I am sure you already have visited http://www.dpreview.com The compare cameras side by side feature is lovely here. But I would suggest you go through the detailed reviews before you make the decision. The reviews at imaging resources are great too. They cover image quality in detail (in print as well as on screen) comparing all points like white balance, color casts, sharpness, noise etc. Happy shooting...

Ajit, My suggestion is, write down your priorities and features you expect in your camera, then comes budget. I started off my second search S3 IS, DSC-H5 and equivalent Panasonic model. I must say even though S3 IS is so much applauded, I had a hard time with its focussing. it was slow focus and focus got messed up after say 8X or so and many more issues. S3 IS was out for me. I looked at DSC-H5, really impressed with the camera. Panasonic model didn't pass first test of WFA (Wife Acceptability factor) so that was out. Since WFA here was very strong, I was asked to look for smaller camera than DSC-H5 because carrying around camcorder and H5 will be a pain. Now, once I have fixed my category, features I want. 1. Good 8x12 prints. (i.e. at least 6MP) 2. Good low light performance (Top priority in my case) 3. Few manual features like Aperture and Shutter priority Canon A series and Finepix F30 were in the last round. With the help of online forums and Prashant, I came down to A640 and F30. I am again going to take some pictures in the local stores before deciding which one to go for. See if this methodology helps you
