Even I wanna buy one.what kind of features should I be looking for.Because if I go to shop they use any feature as selling point whereas I don't even know later how much will i be using it (that perticular feature)for.
What are the essential things/features I should be looking for when choosing a digital camera

Deeps: main feature is ressolution. then compatibility with the s/w. & attachment to computer. In that case Sony is the best. U can directly inset a floppy in the camera & use same floppy in computer to format those snaps.

After a lot of research and checks on the web I think even KODAK is far superior than Sony and has got an ability to be introduced directly as a hardware plug-in.

http://www.kodak.com is the best site giving comparisions as well.

Have a look.

Recently I heard that if you buy a digital camcorder you do not need digital camera ....

is that true ?

Yes, that is true. Most of them have a facility of preparing jpgs also from the shoot.

yeah, laxmi_v, indradhanu is right. now a days most of digital palm/cam corder are comes with steady shot(day/night/flashlight). it mean you can take steady photos too just like camera. and the these you can trasfer to your PC and do whatever you want with any image editing software.

and second thing, some cameras also having flash memory card. the same you can use for steady shot photos......
for Ex. Panasonic PVDV 200/400/800 and series... PVDV100 doesn't have facility of memory card but steady shot facility is available.

BUT, IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO CARRY YOUR CAM/PALM CORDER EVERYWHERE... BETTER TO HAVE DIGITAL CAMERA THEN.

I think that the Feature for taking still shots like a Digital Camera with a Digital Camcorder is called something like "Digital Photo Mode" or "SnapShot Mode"

The camcorder functions as a digital still camera; they're like two cameras in one. Just press the photo
button to capture still pictures on a single videocassette (in SP mode) or combine video and still pictures
together with the added benefit of audio.

Some camcorders can capture fine resolution still pictures onto a MultiMediaCard (50-60 pics per 8Mb
card approx).

No Maverik, milindaa tu mhanato aahes te barobar aahe. >> Kiran: I did not say that Milindaa was wrong. In fact I have corroborated his statement that the feature called "Steady Shot" is not the one used for taking "Still Pictures".

Steady Shot or Image Stabilization (as canon calls it) is indeed for reducing camera shake and

"Digital Photo Mode" is the feature that lets you take still pictures "As If" your camcorder was a digital camera.

:-))

I usually increase resolution of my digital pics in photoshop and upload those pics (4-5 Mb size of 1 pic) to shutterfly.com. They give awesome prints.
They are expensive though.

ohh maverik, sorry abt that, I mis-interpreted that.

But does incresing resolution this way increase the quality of pics? Because when the original picture itself does not have the details, how incresing resolution will help?

Does photoshop have some interpolation algorithm similar to digital zoom?

I use the "digital camera mode" for taking pictures.
maverik, i am also interested in knowing how this works in photoshop? Is there any other software as well other than photoshop?

Thanks

Oops, for a second I forgot that we were talking about photographs taken with a digital camera. Pardon Me !

What I meant was,

A. When I want to make prints from slides, I increase the scan resolution while scanning the slide into a photoshop file. A resolution of 3000 pixels width wise gives an excellent picture quality for printing 8"x10" pictures.

B. For pictures taken with a digital camera.

Suppose the digital camera is rated as a "3.3 Mega Pixel camera", then square root of that is approx 2000 pixels width wise....which should give a fairly good quality 4 inch by 6 inch print.

Cheap consumer digital camera's are not as good and provide very low resolution images, to which nothing can be done. They look good on screen but look bad when printed.

So, while buying a digital camera, it is important to look at that pixel rating. Olympus has recently broken the 4 MegaPixel barrier and have come out with an excellent digital camera. Pictures taken from this camera will look great in print.

maverik, i am also interested in knowing how this works in photoshop? > again, sorry about the confusion. If you own a digital camera, then the quality of final prints will be limited by the pixel rating of your camera.

Is there any other software as well other than photoshop? >> sometimes I use XV (should be availale on any Unix box, I use the one on my SUN workstation) to play around with images. It nowhere close to Photoshop but provides basic picture manipulation capabilities.

Deepblue,

A quick note on your comment that digital camcorder can be used as a still camera. At this moment, there is a wide variety of digital cameras available in the market right from 2megapixels to 10megapixels. Max digital camcorder CCD chip resolution 0.75 megapixels or at the max 1.18megapixels. Most of the 2 megapixels digital handicams are 3 CCD (each being 0.75 megapixels) so in my personal opinion, I wouldn't use digital camcorder for still pictures unless I am going to simply email them, forget printing, you will get pixellated print.
Correct me if I am wrong.

Samir75,
Its true that buydig has got pretty low prices but their seeling strategy is bit weird. I got my camera from them in Dec 2002. They kind of call you up later and try to sell few accesories like, charger and batteries worth USD 40, in my case. So watch out.

Planning to buy another digicam, pocket size.

Any user of Canon Powershot S400/500 (IXUS 400/500) and Sony DSC P10?
I tested both the cameras and impressed by results of both of them, now I want to know owner's opinions on pros and cons of these cameras before I order.

Any suggestions on other cameras belonging to the same category are welcome
