आशिष

काल लेकीच्या पुस्तकात space बद्दल वाचत होते त्यात असं लिहिलंय

We do not believe that universe is infinite, but the outer edges are so warped that even light can not escape it so we do not know much about the edge of the universe

Can you find time to write about what is known or commonly believed about the edges of the universe?

धन्यवाद.

मी सध्या 'briefer history of time' हे पुस्तक वाचत आहे. त्यात space-time, relativity, black holes, warm holes इ. विषयावर माहिती आहे. मला तरी ती जरा समजायला अवघडच जात आहे पण हे पुस्तक जमल्यास चाळून पहा.

storvi, paragkan, bee, thanks.
bee, which story do you mean?

shonoo, I think that statement is too sloppy.
True, we do not know about the edge of the universe, but that is more likely because there is no edge. The universe very likely follows non-Eucledian geometry and is likely to be like a torus (i.e. like a doughnut) and you can keep going without falling off.

As far as the velocity of light is concerned, it is blackholes that have so much gravity that they do not let light escape - though it is the fastest anything can go.

What they very likely meant was that the universe is expanding such that objects that are farther off are going away faster. So if you go far enough, light can not keep up with them (as per our frame of reference - locally everything would be fine for people staying in those galaxies) and we will stop "seeing" those galaxies.

The subject which covers this is cosmology. Even popular books tend to have some simple maths or else its just handwaving.

Will try to look for a couple of layperson books on this. "Brief history ..." is good for many aspects.I haven't read alpha and omega. Brian Greene's books are not exactly on this subject, but they are very readable and very good and provide a broad perspective.

uddalak aaruNI the son of aruNaa was the contemporary of Prachinasala the son of Upamanyu, Satyayajna the son of Pulusha, Indradyumna the grandson of Bhallavi, Jana the son of Sarkaraksha and Budila the son of Asvatarasva. They all learnt about agnihotra from King Asvapati the son of Kekaya.

It is in Chandogya U. VI.II.1,2 that aaruNI says to his son:
In the beginning this world was just sat alone. Some say (and this is where he is challenging the other theory) that in the beginiing was only a-sat and it was from a-sat that sat was produced. But how could this be? In the beginning there was only sat ...

thanks Ashish.. this is very nice to know. U wrote so many names. I wish I have one of such name :-)

Upamanyu,Satyayajna,Pulusha,Budila,Asvatarasva,Asvapati,Kekaya, aaruNi, aaruNaa!!!!!!

but here aaRuNi sounds like female name and aaruNaa like a male name. But its actually other way round :-)

Ashish, isn't it proved now by science that all planets have been evolved from SUN? correct me if I am wrong.

all planets in *our* solar system were formed when our sun was formed (more or less) with the same material (more or less). A disk of matter is likely to have partly stabilised and broken up.

I haven't gone through archive what originated this discussion about books.
I found John Gribbon a good author.
I have "Everyone's guide to Physics" (something similar). Brief history of Time, though excellent, is pretty high level. Guide to Physics goes to greter depth. I'm currently reading his "In Search of Schrodinger's Cat". Its on Quantum physics.

Funny thing is, nationalism (as we know it) really started maybe 300 years back; in Europe. The concept of India/Hindustan as a nation really developed not earlier than 1857. And who was one of the main constituents: the then Moghul Emporer Bahadur Shah Jafar. Till then it was one region vs other based on religion and then to smaller extent language.

About driving out people, I don't think Bengalis had a very good opinion of Maratha rule. So should W.Bengal remember and stoke those feelings and demand ouster of all Marathi people.

If the Aryan invasion theory is proven correct, should Dravid people demand ouster of Arayan people?

And then there is this temptation of enforcing something and banning other things.
Even if we, for a moment, assume validity of certain argument (e.g. porn broadcasting is not good for society), it is the education/enlightment that is going to feth the desired result; not a comitee deciding to ban it.

farend, most of those are closer to metaphors than analogies. The dangerous analogies are ones which urge you to assume something about A because it is true about B when in fact A and B are not related. I will very much love it if Indian cricketers like Harbhajan decide to set their hair free until then win the world cup (with the likes of Dhoni wielding theirs bats like a गदा .

Ashish,

You picked up on of my favourite quotes :-)
And never could agree that "labels" do make life easier, but not necessarily better.

agree that we must strive to make this a better place :-)
