Some Ideas on Pune Chapter of Maayboli

It seems that a fairly large number of Maaybolikars live in Pune or are frequent visitors to Pune. They visit various sites on Maayboli to chat, to blog, to post articles or poems or comments on the postings of others. They obviously have a lot to give and are receptive to new ideas. They also have a keen desire to share, to express themselves and to communicate with other likeminded persons. The fact they are using one of the Maayboli BBs or Hitguj sites shows that they also genuinely care for Marathi language and culture. They are using Internet to satisfy these needs and desires. Many may like the anonymity that a nick gives but there could also be many, who may not want to remain behind the ‘firewall’ of a nick forever.

Would they also care to meet other Maaybolikars periodically in person IRL (In Real Life), to strike\ renew friendships or to share a few common social & cultural interests & hobbies or to just satisfy a curiosity? Could they possibly come together and form some sort of a community or a club or an association of friends?

What would they ‘do’ when they meet? Well, it is up to them really. There need not be a structured schedule. The activities would evolve and take shape as they go along. There could be introductions, poetry-reading sessions, exhibitions of paintings, discussions on books \ plays\ films they have enjoyed, or stage plays or play antakshari-type participative games, have picnics, go rock-climbing or boating or meet some interesting personalities (special invitees) for informal chats or see a movie or play together or listen to some good music or present performances of music \ dance \ story-telling \ magic-shows…… The possibilities can be endless.

I happen to be an office-bearer of Alpabachat Cultural Complex situated at 7 Queens Garden (behind Council hall or near Pune Club), Pune Cant established by a Trust of State Government Employees. It has a nice auditorium, two conference halls, two lawns with ancillary facilities, an art-gallery, a terrace, facilities for badminton, table-tennis, Yoga, aerobics, gymnasium, a food-court, a guest house with 11 A\C and 12 non-A\C rooms, a shoppe etc. In the second-phase, this place will also have a tennis-court, swimming pool, a club-house (with bar & restaurant) and facilities for other games such as volleyball & basketball. In short, the infrastructure exists. The Trust would be happy to make available a meeting place at a nominal cost to promote social\cultural activities such as ‘Pune Chapter’ of Maayboli. Once the Chapter gets going, it could choose a different and a more convenient place for holding meetings, if the members so desire. Alpabachat Cultural Complex could be the springboard. The rest depends upon the members.

To get the ball rolling, a few interested Maaybolikars could come together, elaborate on these few starting ideas, get more ideas & suggestions and chalk out a plan of action.

I would welcome any comments \ suggestions \ volunteers to form a nucleus & take the thing forward. Please feel free to communicate. If the idea does not sound all that hot, please say so. If you have any hotter ideas, spell them out, please.

Dear Karandikar,

I whole-heartedly second your idea!

How is the response coming up? In case if you received low response, it is because you haven't used your pen name (Bapu!) here.

Cheers,
Prashant
