nhaye ghari gelyavar vachen... chandya, companies usually lack the will to take such measures because it affects their own profits. In this case the chocolate industries are already accepting that there is slavery and theyn should do something about it, only they seem to lack the will to keep their own promises.

shilpa, i agree that MNCs lack the willingness. i am not clear how it affects their profit if they hire adults instead of children. may be it is beneficial for company from union issues / benefits perspective. they can atleast impose the age limit restrictions in their overseas plants/factories. if they are procuring materials from some other company, it would be hard for them(MNC) to impose such restrictions (although feasible). poverty (and the vicious cycle that comes with it) does not give choice to children to opt for education over earning for bread.

canVa AaNaI [qao kÜNaI trI Walmart ba_la ivacaarlao %yaaMcyaa saaih it is not entirely true that MNC's cannot control/impose restrictions on foreign plantations/industries where the procure materials from( which happens in case of Walmart, they have people in china making goods, and in case of chocolates the cocoa is procured from these plantations in Africa). The thing is they can impose restrictions and have their inspectors perform regular scheduled and unscheduled inspections to make sure the international laws etc. are met. They can do so becuase in most cases thes plantations/industries are in third world countries and they rely heavily on moneys from MNCs from affluent nations, so these MNCs have it in theor power to implement restrictions. The reason they don't do so is, it jacks up the cost of their goods, and they can't make the same profits they would if they turned a blind eye towards these issues. As is the case with Walmart, you may be well aware that it is a discount superstore chain. It is now the leading discount store chain, and part of the reason is low costs goods it provides it's customers. The way they get low costs is they drive their providers in foreign countries(mainly china) to provide these goods to them in low costs. Now in order to make their clients happy and still get a good profit these providers in turn employ labor at dirt cheap rates and don't ensure humane working conditions as is case with Chinese sweatshops. Actually Walmart inspectors are supposed to do checks at these locations, and these are supposed to be surprise inspections, but what actually happens is the providers are leaked information about the checks in advance and they inturn sabotage the inspections by providing false statements.Walmart gains from this setup because if it diodn't do this it wouldn't be able to sell so cheap, and would be in the same league as target etc. Hope this clears out some things

Storvi: As of my knowledge, Walmart cannot impose any restrictions on labor conditions in country like China cause of trade/internal laws in China. Being a communist country, China itself has so many laws for MNC's to work in or with chinese market that MNC's at times have to bend in order get those profits from such a 3rd world country. This information is solely based on International Business studies and articles used during studies.
