My wife goes to these Haldi Kunku Parties (New York)where Marathi women drink wine and other alcholic drinks. Should we call this as a progress?

looks like people change the definition and intention of these traditional program as per their whims and fancy.
करायचे असेल तर तेच पिणे वगैरे kitty party च्या नावाखाली करतातच ना मग हा सोहळा का बरबटवतात

नि पूजेच्या दिवशीसुद्धा दारू पिणारे असले तर? मी ऐकले की एक गृहस्थ म्हणतात, मी मुद्दाम गणेश चतुर्थीला चिकन खातो, काय करणार आहे गणपति?
वगैरे वगैरे.
आज्ञान हो, सर्व अज्ञान. काय करायचे कशाला करायचे काऽही माहित नाही, नुसते सगळे वरकरणि!
त्यांना कदाचित् सांगितले तर काही लोक ऐकतील, काही नाही. पण वाद मात्र सगळे घालतील, अगदी सवर्ण, इतर जातीतले, मुसलमान, बी जे पी, कॉंग्रेस वगैरे वगैरेचा उद्धार करून! त्यापेक्षा त्यांचे दारू पिणे परवडले असे म्हणायची वेळ येईल. तेंव्हा जरा जपूनच हा विषय हाताळा!

Dear Friends,
It is not fair judge all people who are here from isolated incidents such as described above. I am not saying this is not happening but it must be happening as stray incidents. (I remember in "jave tyanchya desha" by PULA he said he had seen a marathi lady lighting a cigarette on the "Jyota" of Samai during one of such religious event). That was around maybe 30 yrs ago so can we say we had "adhogati" then also?
As ZAKKI rightly said we do things not knowing why we do those. We do Pooja, path, satyanarayana, home, havan without knowing purpose for the sake of doing it. Tyapasun fal kivva samadhan milane sodach, swatache hase matra karun gheto.
As ramdas swami says
"Yathasang te karma kahi ghadena"
"Ghade karm te punya gathi padena"
Best way is to learn from these incidents and decide not to do any of these things.
Just maze 2 paise. I would like to borrow Manuswini's disclaimer here also

खर सांगु का... हे सगळे "करणारे" नामानिराळे राहतात. त्या बायका काय... आपण ईथे कितिही काथ्याकुट केला तरी त्यांना जे करायचे ते त्या करतच राहणार. ईथे जमलेल्यांची मते जाणून त्यावर उहापोह करण्यात काय अर्थ आहे? खर तर अमेरिकन देसीने त्या बायकांकडुनच याचा खुलासा घ्यायला हवा. त्यांची मानसिकता अशी होण्यामागची कारणे शोधण्याचा प्रयत्न केल्यास हे योग्य कि अयोग्य हे ही ठरवता येइल.. नाही का?

आपण याच्या मुळापर्यंत जायला हवे.
(१) दारु पिणे वाइट आहे का?
(२) हळदी-कुंकु कशाकरता करायचे?
जर पहिल्या प्रश्णाचे उत्तर एखदेवेळेस घेतली तर हरकत नाही असे असेल, आणी दुसर्याचे, एकत्र येवुन जरा निवांत वेळ घालवायचा असे असेल आणी हळदी-कुंकु एखदेवेळेसच करत असतील त्या तर त्या दिवशी पिणे हे काही चुकिचे वाटत नाही.
उद्या कुणि म्हणेल त्यांनी चित्रपट पाहु नये त्या दिवशी किंवा पाहिलाच तर अर्धनग्न बाइ दाखवली नाही असाच पहावा. आता तुम्हिच सांगा, असे हिंदि चित्रपट हलदी-कुंकवाअला तरी सापडतील का?
अर्थात प्यायची आवश्यकता आहे का हा ज्याचा त्याचा प्रश्ण आहे आणी ते त्यांनिच ठरवावे असे एक आपले माझे मत आहे.

माझ्या मते, परदेशात खूप काळ राहिलेल्या बायका थोड्या फ़ार पाश्चात्त संस्कृतीच्या जवळ येतात. मग जिथे एखादा छोटासा समूह पुर्वी भेटीगाठी घेत होता तो समूह आता भेटीगाठी न घेता 'पार्ट्या' करतो. तसेच इथे ह्या हळदी कुंकवाच्या कार्यक्रमाचे झाले असेल. हळदी कुंकू ह्या बायकांना करायचाच असेल पण त्याला थोडे 'पार्टीचे' वातावरण निर्माण व्हावे म्हणून कुणी दोघी तिघींनी दोन घोट दारुचे घेतले तर त्यात काही गैर नाही. बायका ह्या पुरुषांप्रमाणे दारुड्या कधीच होऊ शकत नाही. असतील अशा बायका पण त्या लाखात एक असतील. अपवाद म्हणून सोडून द्यावे.
आशिष, वर्ध्यात कित्येक कुटुंब ह्या दारूपाई उध्वस्त झालेले आहेत. तेंव्हा भारतीयांनी तरी दारू पिऊ नये असे माझे ठाम मत आहे. भारतीय मनुष्य दारुचे व्यसन निर्माण करण्यात खूप पारंगत झालेला आहे.

I am begining to agree with Bee. I think it OK to relax the norms a bit. In old times even men going to Hotel to eat was considered as imoral. So, with financial stability relaxation comes naturally.
I am begining to accept that that during baby shower they drink Maragrita or during cookie party somone makes rum cookies (cookie with rum in it). It is only for fun and nothing serious.
Ata men also go to dance bar (india) or strip club (US) once a while nowadays. Tyat kahi serious nasate. Just thodi maja.

It is entirely useless, only a means for women to come together and chat (we can do it on ladies night out), it is insulting to women who are widowed. so instead of discussing whether it's appropriate to drink at such occasions, let's relax the norms and discuss whether it's fruitful to have such occasions in today's day and age आता होऊन जाउदे.
