Hemantp: I assume you already have a TV/VCR/VCD-DVD Player/Audio system and now you are looking for a sound effective system which provides the best theatre effect, right!!!

depending on how much the budget is - you may also need a receiver (which could double up as an amp) or a separate additional amplifier

Hemant: Home theater 2 prakarache aahet, 1. descrete systems andi 2. in box system.
1. Descrete system mhanje, receiver ani speakers choose karata yetat. e.g H&K cha receiver changala aahe ani Bose che speakers. You can use your DVD player but see that it has optical output or at least digital.
2. In box madhe Bose chya system changlya aahet.

Hemant if yo are auidophile you won't buy that piece. Look at THD values - 10%. YOu wold like to stick to values such as 6-7% at least.
check up crutchfields.com for more information..

I have Denon AVR-2802 receiver (0.05% THD) and I am very happy with that. Other good receivers will be Harmon Kardon, Yamaha etc. You can have audition at Tweeters, but buy online :-)

i have always had this question:
in an ~ 12ft by 14 ft apt living room - can you make out the difference?? i can understand that you can easily make out the difference between say bose 5.1 and aiwa's 5.1 - but can you really notice the difference between various bose systems?

if you have a house, much bigger room etc - then the placement of speakers, wall reflection etc will matter to the extent that the performance change is noticeable ...

what i meant was: lets say you arranged a bose speaker system the way it was supposed to be - and next you tried another 5.1 bose system. i am pretty sure that the difference would be extremely difficult to spot in an apt room - assuming that the recording quality is good/. based on that - the only consideration in buying a bose 5.1 channel speaker system would be the price, right?becuase its pretty hard to spot differences in quality ...

but one thing i have noticed - witha very good speaker ssystem, mp3 quality (128-192kbps) is NO match for prerecorded CDs.

Sorry for the topic deviation

I don't quiet agree with Abedekar about mp3 quality. If you check bitrate of pre-recoded CD then it is 161.1kbps so if you rip at 160kbps, your ear can sense the glitch (in certain kind of music) but if you rip at 192 kbps then I have not experienced any trouble so far. The funda behind it is, it usually gets rid of those wavelengths which our ear can't sense anyway.
Nowadays I have started ripping at VBR which sounds better idea, as per the reports but I am have 'that' ear to sense it so for me, 192 kbps or VBR, lesser file size, would go for it.

So if someone is indeed audiophile and have warm wallet, take a look at Nakamichi, oh lord, beats crap of almost all systems I heard to so far....

Prasad, you perhaps meant to say a 'red hot wallet'. One would have to spend around $17K flat to get the Nak SS 21!

Giriraj,
Check cnet.com, I usually go through their reviews. May be you would like to check audiophile.com that Upashiboka suggested.

AV reciver either yamaha rx-430 or
Denon.
need help with speakers
I have checked Jamo speakers and they are good.Has anybody used Pandom spekaers (made in India)
The cubic spekaers packaged with most of the branded equipment (e.g.bose lifestyle ) do not fill halls of size of 500/600 sq ft. and not value for money either.does anyone know good local manfacturer/dealer in Mumbai?
