Hemant, if your TV is compatible to NTSC or PAL both then, DVD player will work in spite of negative answer to the first question :o)

speaking about dvd player only, hemant's 3rd criteria needs yes ans.
1st, can be solved by TV with ntsc, pal compatibility.
2nd, can be solved by either dual voltage compatibility, or, a 230 to 110 voltage converter, (+frequency changer, theoratically speaking, it is required.) but normally all gadgets use just a voltage converter.

I have the Daewoo DVD player... I bought it at SAMS for $99. Make sure the player plays DVDs from region other than US. Mine plays DVDs made for "All Regions"... (I don't mean DVDs made for any region. The ones made for "All Regions" and US). The quality is good. haven't tried it in India yet..

Some days back Comp USA had a good deal on Apex DVD player (supporting variable voltage) . $50 after mail in rebate. See if you can get one of those. I have got good feedback about this one..

Has anyone had a problem with playing copied VCDs?? my DVD player doesn't play the copied VCDS properly.

Namaskar mandali,
I finally bought the apex AD-1500 for 99$.
From
http://www.vcdhelp.com I got the hack
for the player. This CD-R firmware hack
disables the macrovision thingy in the player
and also it enables the player to play DVD
of any region.

Arch: VCD's from India are in PAL format. Ur DVD player does not support PAL format mhanun u cannot watch VCD's

Alternate Soln: If you have a CD burner and Nero Burning software then copy those VCD files on to your PC and burn new CD as VCD (choose NTSC system) and U should be able to watch those new CD's now VCD's on your DVD player :-)

I hope this helps......

Ur DVD player does not support PAL format mhanun u cannot watch VCD's
>>This is not the only reason you can not paly VCDs. Few of the manufactores in India especially ones for classic hindi movies, use CD-R for copying VCDs. If your player is not supporting such format (chances are high that it won't if you have bought it few years back), those VCDs will not work. Converting using PC will not help in this case. Check your manuals before you put efforts in conversion.

Arch: U dont need to copy all files, just copy files under Mpeg directory with ".dat" extension. With NERO burn blank CD as VCD then Nero takes care of generating all other required files. I have used Roxio but with lots of probs so Nero works best. Regarding access denied, after copying try restarting the machine or logging off should release the reference to those files from the memory while copying.

Asami: U r right!

another problem i have faced: i have tried to copy VCDs to regular CD-Rs - and they seem to have more than 700 mb of data ....

how do they manage that ?

as an aside,
http://www.vcdhelp.com is an excellent source for getting ratings on dvd players and what formats they can play. i was able to confirm that the DVD player i was planing to buy was indeed able to play VCDs

Abedekar: regarding 700mb VCD, as of my knowledge the VCD is in PAL system once u copy the ".dat" and use NERO to burn CD's with NTSC system option then it will appropriately convert the file which is less in size......atleast thats what happened when I tried coping somes VCD's.

Arch: 1st Copy the ".dat" file from your VCD to PC hard disk. NERO will convert ".dat" (PAL) file into ".dat" (NTSC) file so the extension will not change. You mentioned that the 'CD burn' option is greyed out which should not be the case, if you have selected the '.dat' file while creating the VCD. If you still cannot figure out then send me email with detail steps u follow or call me.

Arch, check up VCDhelp.com. I'm not sure how effective Nero is for PAL to NTSC conversion. I searched on net and downloaded few java files which I found were more effective and fast for such conversion. Tyanchi links mala vcdhelp varach milali hoti.
