I guess rediff.com also has some kind of service.but the site is very slow. As far as I remember that site also gives some suggestion ..where to invest depending on your requirement. But I think this is only for Indian market

Panipuri - this may help...
1. i would suggest ki if you've never invested before you start with a newspaper, say the Wall Street Journal (its a witty paper actually) for free at a local library or Financial Express if you live in India
2. after that, to learn good investment principles (which does not always equate to making money in the short term :) read "The Intelligent Investor" and then "Security Analysis" by Benjamin Graham which focus on the method of sound fundamental research (versus technical research)
3. after that, to get a feel for the market, i'm sure you could start w/ finance.yahoo.com, type in a ticker symbol and get more info on a company or perform some simple screens
4. when you're confident that you know much more about stocks than you know now, read "A random walk down wall street" to burst your personal confidence bubble :)
5. THEN, i would suggest you select some investment vehicles depending on whether you live in the U.S., India or elsewhere

Now if its only sites you're looking for and not an intro to investing (which you may already have!) here are a few basic ones that i would recommend...
- finance.yahoo.com for general info
- bigcharts.com for better charting
- berkshirehathaway.com -- read the letters from the chairman (chronologically if possible) - Warren Buffett -- very well written and VERY educational
- quicken.com cha stock screener is much better than yahoo's

Folks, since many of you asked me to mail you some of the resources that I have known and used in the past, I decided to make a public offering here on this BB. :-)

Following are the links that I used to frequently use.

Warning: You may have to register at some of the websites shown below.

Bigger warning: Some of the links may not work because I havent verified them in a long long time :-)

Even bigger warning: Fresh entrants, be ready to lose your peace of mind. And as they all say, think long term! :-) There is no quick and easy money.

***** Firstly, to get warmed up and get acquainted with the jargon, here are a few good links. Go through all, take your time.

(1)
http://finance.yahoo.com

(2) http://www.datek.com

(3) http://www.fidelity.com

(4) http://www.myretirementplan.com

(5) http://www.schwab.com

(6) http://www.clearstation.com - good site for initial studies. The basics of studying company charts are explained in detail here - MACD, Stochastics, Trend analysis etc..

*****At the next level, for some serious research try these sites:

(1) http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/home.asp

(2) http://www.bloomberg.com

(3) http://www.smartmoney.com

(4) http://cbs.marketwatch.com/news/newsroom.htx

(5) http://www.quicken.com

(6) http://www.money.com

*****These are a few good sites for the US-Economic overview. Helps get a picture beyond the stock market.

(1) http://www.dismal.com

(2) The economic calendar at http://www.dismal.com/affiliates/framed/msnbc/calendar.asp

(3) http://www.wsj.com

*****For the hardcore investors and miners, these are my personal favourites. These are links to specific resources. These links would hopefully be useful for folks who are actively trading.

(1) For after hours quotes: http://www.etrade.com/cgi-bin/gx.cgi/applogic+ResearchStock

(2) For everything related to IPO's, go to http://www.ipofinancial.com

(3) The Earnings Report's calendar is at http://biz.yahoo.com/research/earncal/today.html

(4) The market map. This is an awesome URL. Shows you the entire market in one shot. Learn to navigate through and you'll be amazed at the insight it gives you, http://www.smartmoney.com/marketmap/

(5) For individual stock research, go to http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/research/wizards/SRW.asp

(6) For stocks search per criteria, go to http://moneycentral.msn.com/articles/common/matcherpro.asp

(7) For company snapshots and information, go to http://www.multexinvestor.com

(8) For Stock Split charts this is a good one, http://cbs.marketwatch.com/news/current/oli_stocksplit.htx?source=htx/http2_mw

(9) This one is for the curious investors; for Future Prediction charts, go to http://quotes.freerealtime.com/rt/frt/startpage

(10) For those who need a broader view of the horizon, try this site to get evaluation and information on a 'per sector' basis http://www.cnetinvestor.com/tech-industry-performance.asp

*****For references, expert opinions and analyst reports and daily reports, these are a few places I find useful information:

(1) Good technical reports found at http://www.bull-market.com/1technical.html

(2) Wall Street Journal highlights at http://www.msnbc.com/news/WSJHIGHLIGHTS_Front.asp

(3) Again, some daily reports at http://www.smartmoney.com/intro/stocks/

(4) Afterhour trading reports at http://www.bloomberg.com/bbn/afterhours.html

(5) Stock market news and analysis at http://www.msnbc.com/news/COMTOPLEVELMARK_Front.asp

*****Some of the people whom I thought were good analysts and their picks. Read what these expert analysts think:

(1)Jim Jubaks next 12 months, at http://moneycentral.msn.com/articles/invest/jubak/stocks.asp

(2) Jim Jubaks top 50 stocks at http://moneycentral.msn.com/articles/invest/jubak/fifty.asp

(3)Gene Marcial at http://www.businessweek.com/common_frames/pw.htm?/bwplus/icwallst.htm

(4) Cramers business-to-business coaster at http://www.thestreet.com/comment/wrongrear/830048.html

(5) How to value stocks (hasnt anyone ever felt like asking how and why did Sycamore (SCMR) touch ridiculous highs of $240? ) Go to http://www.fool.com/school/hoetovaluestocks.htm

*****Hope this is useful. :-)

nirakar: there are several excel addons already available - but if you intend to sit down, search literature, get the best algorithms and network topologies etc. and then code it in yourself, then google might prove inadequate. yet most of these softwares do not talk about the papers/theory that the software is based on ....

in the meantime, this might help ... ofcourse they wont come free!!
http://www.neuroxl.com/
http://www.alyuda.com/

and yet, there is always some free stuff ...

http://www.geocities.com/adotsaha/NNinExcel.html

for a recently concluded project, we used an ANN written inhouse, although we needed some tricks to interface it with our pre existing code ... ofcourse the training was not for financial data

Also I am trying R application from Stuttgart university.
If you are intrested, I will send you site link. (I don't have it here)

* for trading directly in stocks - what are junta's experiences with various brokerages (etrade/ameritrade/schwab etc)?
* what does one look for - when selecting a mutual fund (there are probably a ton of sites - but a paraphrasing would be very welcome)
* what do folks do about 401k money when they move back to india?? i heard that there is no penalty for withdrawing, if you are unemployed for a year - so do you just hold off for sometime after you go back ... show the IRS that u are unemployed in the US for the reqd period ... and then take it out???

Abe:
Info on ETF's

People who are interested in virtual stock market and wanna see how things turn out without using real "money".... Try this Vitrual Stock Exchange

Abe: The option is good if you are planning to move to India in near future or else wanna send money back home without converting back in $ else I doubt if its a viable option considering commissions costs...

मी दोन प्रकाशनांची वर्गणी भरतो आणि त्या बद्दल मला आलेले अनुभव
Wall Street Journal online edition
wsj.com

Morningstar.com
Morningstar.com
