मायबोलिकरांनो, बर्याच जणांना हे माहीत असेल.
आॅगस्ट मधे Z TV वर १८ महिन्याच्या निराली ला bone marrow transplant ची गरज आहे असे ऐकले आणि त्या नंतर २ महिन्यानी www.savenirali.com वर जाऊन पाहिले. इतक्या गोजिरवाण्या बाळात २ महिन्यात lukemia चा राक्षस इतका फरक पाडु शकतो हे खरे वाटेना.
आपण दिवाळी साजरी करत असताना ते बाळ chemo च्या दिव्यातुन जात होतं. किती यातना होत असतील त्या आइ-बापाना. खरच, आपल्या मुलाना नशिबाचे भोग सहन करताना पहायला लागणे ह्या सारखी दुसरी शिक्षा आइवडिलांना नाही.
आपण सर्वजण त्या website ला भेट द्या आणि काही करता आले तर पहा.. निदान तिला आणि अश्या अनेक पिल्लांना बरे होण्यासाठी प्रार्थना करा. मी स्वत्: bone marrow donor साठी register करणार आहे. उलट माझी इछा आहे कि माझा असा उपयोग कोणाला तरी व्हावा. बर्याच states मधे drive चालु आहेत.. प्रत्येक शहरात लोकल आॅफीस पण असतात. सर्व माहिती मिळेल websitte वर.
भारतीय वंशाच्या लोकाना match मिळणे खुप अवघड असते कारण पुरेसे donors नाहित. म्हणुन जास्तीत्-जास्त लोकानी register करणे आवश्यक आहे. उद्या आपल्या कोणाच्या घरी हा राक्षस आला तर हिच registry आपल्या कामास येणार आहे.
आता मेडिकल मधे १०० टक्के यशाची खात्री तर कशाचीच देता येत नाही पण प्रयत्त्न करणे आपल्या हातात आहेच ना?
तर ज्या कोणाला इछ्छा असेल त्यानी ह्या जीवनदानात हातभार लावावा.

कोणाला काही माहिती हवी असेल तर मेल करावी. मी Dr. नाही, पण योग्य तिथुन उत्तरं मिळवायचा प्रयत्न करेन. मेळ्याला खुप लोक येतात, आता कसा प्रतिसाद मिळतो बघु.
भारतीय लोक मदत करण्यात मागे असतात असे नाही, पण काही गोष्टींचा कमी प्रसार झाला आहे त्यापैकी ही एक. तर awareness वाढवायला क्रुपया मदत करा. कारण 6 million लोकांनी जगात register केले आहे, त्यात south asians १ टक्क्याहुन पण कमी आहेत. कोणाला काही मेल draft हवा असेल अमराठी लोकांन fw करण्यासाठी तर सांगा.

लोक हो, मी आपली जी काही नविन माहीति मिळेल ती इथे लिहिणार आहे. asianmarrow-non profit org च्या मुलीनी १ मेल fw केली आहे ती इथे टाकत आहे.
Regarding Patients: Nirali Naik the 18 month year old baby has
relapsed and desperately needs to find a match in order to survive. If
you know of people who have not registered, I beg you to please
encourage them to do so. No one should have to die because they could
not find a match. It is just not right. Luckily, Sai Praveena has
found a match and is currently going through the process to prepare
for her transplant. She is currently going through chemotherapy. I
have visited her in the hospital. It is sad to see the amount of
suffering such a young sweet child is going through. At least she has
a good chance. We wish the same for Nirali.
This is definitely a beautiful program to be part of. It definitely
does help save lives. Yesterday I was visiting Sai and her grandfather
was praying for her much of the time.

Yesterday, November 13th Kristeen and I spent the day with our
precious little best friend Sai Praveena, who is currently in the
process of entering remission so that her transplant can take place.
Wow, what a lucky soul. Sai has a match. Her life is on the way to
being back to its healthy ways. She will be able to continue giving as
she does so naturally and wholeheartedly. Yesterday, Sai laughed,
played, hugged, and gave so much love as she laid on her bed inside
the pediatrics unit of the hospital. Oh how her smile and eyes light
up a room! Complete beauty. She is having many struggles, but she is
determined to have this transplant. And is very grateful for the
match. She is fighting, and holds within her full "positive power!"
She is greatly shocked that Nirali doesn't have a match. Please
understand dear people. Change is possible. We too can "Be the change
we wish to see in the world"~Gandhi Ji. Its happening for Sai and it
happened for Pushpinder Kaur. Give Nirali that same
opportunity. Let her live. Let her smile. Let her play. Let her love.
Let her have a future. Please, please please.

१ महिन्यात किती लोकांना ह्या बद्दल फ़ोनवर, मेल नी, flyers देउन सांगितले ह्याचि गणतीच नाही. पण एका जरी व्यक्तीने ह्या माहितीचा उपयोग करुन घेतला तरी मला खुप आनंद होइल. कारण ती १ व्यक्ती अजुन कितीतरी लोकाना ही माहिती देउ शकते. माझा स्वत:चा ह्यात काही स्वार्थ नाहि. फक्त भारतीयांच भविष्य अर्ध्या-पाव थेंबानी जरी सुरक्षीत करता आल तर!!! हाच विचार आहे.

म्रुण्मयी, खुप आभारी आहे गं. माझ्या पण Arizona मधे नसलेल्या काही friends नि kit मागवली आहे. १-२ जणानि drive करायची तयारी दाखवली आहे. drive करायला पण इथे L.A. हुन asianmarrow चे लोक येतील, मी फ़क्त प्रचार करणार आणि कारकुनी कामं. माझ्या बरोबर काम करायला ३-४ मुली येत आहेत त्यात एक तर साडेआठ महिन्याचि गरोदर आहे पण एका पायावर तयार झाली.
कालच एक घटना कळली. syntel मधे जिथे मी १-२ वर्षापुर्वी कामाला होते, तिथे एकाच्या मुलाला ल्युकेमिया झाला. तो ३ वर्षाचा आहे. तर त्याला युरोप मधे cord blood match मिळाला आणि आता त्याच्यावर seattle मधे उपचार चालू झालेत. तो नीट बरा व्हावा ह्याकरता माझ्या शुभेछ्छा.
तर ज्या मुली आई होणार आहेत त्यानी cord blood donate करण्या बद्दल माहिती काढायला हरकत नाही. तसेही नाळ टाकुनच देतात त्या पेक्षा उपयोग तरी होइल. मला फ़ार माहित नाही कारण माझ्या मुलीच्या वेळी मला ह्या बद्दल ठीक माहिती नव्हती. आता वाईट वाटते चान्स गेला म्हणुन. पण जाणकरांनी क्रुपया माहिती द्यावी जेणेकरुन ज्याना माहित नाही त्याना बरे. आता जर बुश पण गेला तर cord blood research वर federal जास्त funds देतीलही.

ok ज्याना काल drive मधे काय झाले हे जाणुन घ्यायचि उत्सुकता असेल त्यांच्यासाठी.
११ ते ६ आम्ही तिथे कामात होतो. ४-५ हजार लोक आले होते. लोक येत जात होते. आमच्या स्टाॅल कडे पहात पहात जात होते. सुरवातिला फक्त americans register करायला आले. आम्ही जास्त volunteers नसल्याने आम्हाला लोकांकडे जाऊन जाऊन सांगायला वेळच होत नव्हता. एकच बाई धड्पडत सर्वाना जाऊन सांगत होती. खर तर बरीच प्रसिद्धी केली होती, पण volunteers साठी प्रतिसाद कोणि दिला नाही. कारण नाही म्हट्ले तरी peper-work नीट करायचे होते. काहीही चूक झाली तर donors चि records mix होण्याचा पण चान्स होता. म्हणुन तिथे लक्ष द्यायलाच हवे होते. स्वत: लोकांकडे जाऊन सांगितले असते तर जास्ती फायदा झाला असता तो काल झाला नाही. एकच मुलगा आपणहून आला मी AZINDIA वर दिलेली माहिती पाहुन, त्यानी फ़ारच मदत केली.
एक विचित्र योगयोग म्हणजे आमच्याच गावात २ patients निघाले. त्यांच्या घरच्यानी ३-४ दिवसापूर्वी asianmarrow ला नेमकी जी इथे येणार होती तिलाच फ़ोन केला, drive साठी आणि त्याना कळले आम्ही आधीच तयारी केली आहे.. मग ते पण आले. त्यातलि एक होति patient ची बायको. ती hospital मधून तडक स्टाॅल वर आली होति आणि हिंमत एकवटुन तिथे कामाला उभी राहिली. त्याना ४ वर्षाचि मुलगी आहे. तिला hello करताना माझ्याच डोळ्यात पाणी यायला लागलं, पण ती शांतपणे बोलत होती. तिच्या बर्याच ओळखीच्यांनी signup केले.
आमच्यात २ १५ वर्षाची मुलं होति, समजुतदार होति. त्याना लोकांकडे flyers घेउन पाठवले पण बहुतेकांनी त्याना सरळ उडवुन लावले. बिचारी हिरमुसली होउन परत आली. म्हणुनच मोठी माणसे ह्या कामाला मिळाली असती तर जास्त ऊपयोग झाला असता.
शेवटी स्टेज वर नाच गाणी चालली होति त्यातच जाऊन आवाहन केले तेव्हा कुठे लोकांना लक्ष द्यावे वाटले.
मग हळुहळु लोक आले आणी ६ वाजेपर्यन्त १० लोक तरी मिळतील की नाही असे वाटत होते तर ९५ लोकानी नाव नोंदवले. ह्यातलेच patients चे मित्र पण होते. त्यामुळे अस कुठेसं वाटुन गेलं कि आपल्या ओळखीपैकि कोणी संकटात सापडेतोवर वाट पहावी का आपण कि proactive व्हावे कोणत्याही गोष्टीत?
असो, अगदीच फ़ियास्को झाला नाही.
लोकांचा response पाहुन जरा वाईट वाटले पण शेवटी एकाला जी गोष्ट जितकी सेन्सेटीव वाटते तितकी दुसर्‍याला नाही वाटत.
पण इतकच वाटतं फक्त हीच नाही तर कोणत्याही बाबतीत तहान लागल्यावर विहीर खणू नये.

Me my husband and my mom who was visiting me from India at that time, had done this marrow checking for somebody else last year at the local temple. They took a blood sample and we filled up a long qustionary
But now
I have lost my card that they gave me with the result and info. But I assume still they will have the info to reach me right or do I need to do something

Sahi, good to know that u r already registered.
You are registerd until your 61st birthday. They WILL contact you if you come up as a potential match.
HOWEVER, PLEASE make sure to update your information if your name,address or phone# changed. Contact 800-marrow-2 to do so.
Please give them your email address if u didnt do that while registering. Now I do not know how would u do that without donor id#, they may search by ssn# or something else.
Apparently Nirali had 6 potential matches out of which 3 could not be traced and remaining 3 were not good match.
The other lady's husband I mentioned (who I thought was a new patient) already had 1 transplant but his body did not accept, so now they have to find the donor all over again.

Update on Patient Sai Praveena Tamma: Disneyland Trip
Sunday January 21, 2007 was probably one of the hardest days I have ever experienced. Biba, Manuri, Sukh and I visited Sai in the hospital. Sai, as many of you know by now, is very sick with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. Upon walking into the hospital we saw Sai's father, Venkat. It was obvious from his face what he was going to tell
us. He basically told us that her condition was very bad and things looked very grim. He gave a look that showed that he has given up. After 4 rounds of chemo, Sai's Leukemia blasts are at 85% when they need to be at around 15% to have a transplant. The doctors at Kaiser have said that there is nothing they can do to save her.
One of Sai's wishes was to go to Disneyland. Sai wanted this and we made it happen. I have attached some pictures. I also included a picture of her birthday party in the hospital. Disneyland was a nice day. Volunteers Sukh, Biba, Manuri, and I were there with her mom, dad, grandfather, grandmother and baby sister. It was so nice to see Sai happy and smiling. She got to meet Mickey and Minnie and went on a few rides like the haunted mansion, alice in wonderland, and Peter Pan.
Of course Sai is very weak and it took so much strength for her to be able to experience Disneyland. More than Disneyland, just being able to be outside and see trees and flowers must have been so wonderful; Sai has been in the hospital for most of the time since last year. To see the look on her face when she saw the fireworks, was incredible. I thank Make a Wish Foundation for giving us the chance to take Sai to Disneyland!
I'm so amazed by the love, kindness and compassion of this child. She is funny, beautiful and extraordinarily sweet. She is severely sick and in pain, but still she asks me if I'm taking care of myself because she knows I have a cold. She tells us stories on how she is smarter than the nurses at the hospital, beats us at Monopoly every time, tells that she wants to be an astronaut, tells us how good of a cook she is and tells us the stories about how close her and her cousins used to be when she lived in India.
I appreciate every word and every look she gives me. She represents so much goodness, love, compassion and truth. I wish I could take her pain away and sincerely promise that she will be able to continuing
telling me stories for many years. Even writing this is so difficult because its as if I'm indicating something that I have not admitted to myself. How can something so good suffer so much? I wish I could take the pain away from her family and tell them that everything is ok.
I just realize more and more that every moment of life is a gift; I hope to share this experience and message with all of you.
Inspiring Story!
I recently met Stephanie Rudat! It was such a highlight seeing her so healthy and happy and full of life. Stephanie received a bone marrow transplant when she was just 16 months old. I also had the pleasure of
meeting Stephanie's sister and mother. She just turned 16 today! She enjoys playing soccer and is looking forward to going to college one day. She hopes to be a crime investigator. Farhat, her mother said
that finding a donor was like winning the lotto and that she found the best thing in life. She was thankful that she met the person who did so much for her child.
She stated that the donor lives within us and that he is part of the Stephanie. Words can't explain her thankfulness for the donor. I have attached a picture of Stephanie she is the one in the middle wearing the black and red.
To me Stephanie signifies everything this program stands for!

The Real Sacrifice

Updates on patient Nirali Naik (Received Bone Marrow Recipient)
Tonight, many sick patients await the marrow donor that will save their life. The prime obstacle in recruiting marrow donors is one 19s concerns for themselves: the time sacrifice and mild discomfort that comes from donating bone marrow. Too often we are unwilling to make even the smallest sacrifice to save a life. What is lost in the discussion on marrow donation is what remains hidden 13 not the mild suffering of the donor, but the tremendous suffering of those who wait for them. Were we more familiar with their struggle, our own inconveniences in donating marrow would be put in perspective, and we would be much more likely to take this small step to save a life.
18 month old Nirali was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblast Leukemia on July 26th 2006. Her struggle highlights the comparatively small sacrifice of the donor, bringing perspective to the decision to donate and reminding us all that the true sacrifice is that of the sick patients in need of a donor.
When Nirali was just one year old, she became afflicted with high fever and was brought to the hospital. That day she was diagnosed with leukemia. Chemotherapy began immediately, and so began a struggle that eclipses anything most of us will ever face.
Immediately the doctors warned Nirali 19s family of one truth of chemotherapy: before it can get better, it has to get worse. They were warned of what would be Nirali 19s rapidly declining health over the first two weeks, and right away they were seeing it first hand. Nirali began with severe nausea and loss of appetite. Confined to a hospital bed, Nirali 19s parents watched as the side effects of chemo mounted. Nirali was first placed on medication for a rising heart rate. Pain medications followed. She began coughing up blood, was too weak to walk or get out of bed, had heavy vomiting, diarrhea, high blood pressure, and mouth sores. All of this was described by the doctors as 1cnormal 1d.
The accumulating side effects of chemotherapy were confusing and difficult to read.
Because Nirali was too young to talk, her parents could only see her general discomfort without knowing what ailed her. Chemotherapy was proving to be a heart wrenching guessing game as Nirali 19s health deteriorated.
And then came the event that could turn everything around: her transplant. While Nirali has not found a bone marrow match from a donor, she has a cord blood match. Cord blood is another way a patient who needs a bone marrow transplant can be saved. The small amount of blood inside the umbilical cord can sometimes have enough blood forming cells necessary to help someone who needs a transplant. The blood stem cells are usually only enough for children. If you or someone you know is pregnant and delivering a baby in the next few weeks, consider donating the umbilical cord blood. The stored cord blood is called a cord blood unit.
The chemotherapy treatments until this point had been in preparation of this transplant. The standard transplant uses very strong treatment that destroys your diseased cells. It also destroys your immune system so it will not attack the donated cells. After this regimen, blood-forming cells are introduced through a tube that goes into a vein in your chest. The transplanted cells move into the spaces inside your bones where they create new marrow. A cord blood transplant is successful when the donated cells you received for your transplant start to grow and make new blood cells. This is called engraftment. Achieving engraftment is an important milestone in transplant recovery. Until that hoped-for day and beyond, Nirali would continue to suffer from the after-effects of chemotherapy.
Her persistent skin rash worsened. She was so itchy and scratched so hard, her parents had to cover her hands with mittens and tape it up so her skin wouldn 19t bleed. Constant itching gave her difficulty sleeping and she was treated with heavy medication. Her voice became coarse, she had difficulty speaking, and her lips were cracked and bled.
One of the more cruel ironies of the treatment process is a treatment feedback loop: every side-effect of chemotherapy required medication, and every medication brought with it more side effects, many of which required their own medications. Nirali was taking numerous pills, taking the good with the bad as her family hoped for more benefits than negatives. All the while, they wait for the signs that signal the first steps to recovery.
There were small successes on the way. Nirali one day having enough energy to walk was something to celebrate. As was the day she received permission to leave the ward, and was taken to the clinic next door to see the fish tank. And on February 2nd, 2007, Nirali has her third consecutive day of ANC counts over 500 - a significant and much awaited milestone that marks an early sign of engraftment. And with her dramatic improvement, on February 16th Nirali was released from the hospital.
And for every step forward in the recovery process, it seems there is one back. On day 55 after the transplant, some bad news: Nirali's blood tested positive for CMV Cytomegalovirus, a condition which can affect her lungs. Then, after a long stretch of recovery, Nirali 19s condition was taking even more turns for the worse. 13 since the news of CMV in her blood, fluid buildup around the heart was discovered and Nirali was readmitted to the hospital. This is where Nirali sleeps tonight, not knowing if tomorrow brings healing or decline.
For Nirali, the future is unwritten. Most of us will never know her sacrifice, but we can make a small one of our own. For children like Nirali, marrow donation is their only hope. When one remembers the suffering of Nirali, our own excuses for inaction fade to dust, and we are confronted with a duty to help. We can not save Nirali with our tears, only our deeds. She was a true gift, not just to me, but to the world. I am amazed at how many lives she impacted and touched. How many lives she gave unconditionally to, and how many lives gave unconditionally to her. I thank you for keeping her in your daily prayers. We must keep in mind that some souls come into this world for limited times, shorter then the expectancies we wish for them. But it is not the end. We will meet again. And it is not about time. It is about what they leave behind, all that they teach us, the lessons and tools they empower us with,
and the NOW that we share. It is about the Love that they gave, and the Love that we got to give them. Life continues. We all meet again. Somewhere, some how. I know this for a fact, because of one day. One
day! Oct 22nd, 2006, the day Sai's soul became a part of mine. I am blessed for, each day, each month, each conversation, each laugh, each moment, each day in the hospital, each day in Burbank, each cry, each hardship, each pain, each memory, each gift, each hug, and each positive power, me and Sai shared. And always love God. Even though God's plan may seem to us to hold pain, just know that in that pain and suffering their is much love and many gifts. बाप रे... उगाच आपण आपली समजून काढायची का की मेडीकल सायन्स खूप पुढे गेलय म्हणुन.. मी निरालीच्या वेब साईटला कायम भेट दिले होती... मला वाटलेलं की इतके जण पुढाकार घत आहेत तर ती नक्की बरी होईल.. खूप cute छोकरी होती. परमात्मा तिच्या आत्म्याला शांती देवो.. आणि पुन्हा असलं दु:ख कुणालाही देऊ दे नको.
