ICICIDirect.com
They offer all services [Demat account and trading, etc] so it makes sense..
[Quality of services is as usual...:-) ]

Not sure if any other site is offering all services.
check with Sharekhan.com

Chiutaai : Though ICICIDirect and others offer demat and trading services, first verify that they offer services for NRIs residing in UK. US Residents can't open such account.

Thanks , Bsa & Manish. I know, I have read very bad reviews about ICICI's service. Citibank allows but they want me to go to London and visit their office there, thats stupidity , I stay at Scotland and they wont accept if I post the documents ! I think I should either try it with ICICI or tell my mom to invest it in her name in India.

Correct me if I am wrong, as long as u have a Tax pin number, you can open a trading account, Isn't it?

Not sure if TAX Pin is enough.
Some basic documents required, Like address proof, etc. After recent IPO fraud, SEBI has tightened the process.

Chiutaai,

You better open your account with ICICI or Sharekhan on mothers name & do it in India.

For NRI it is more complicated. Every share you buy & sell this information has to go to RBI. Banks like ICICI &UTI do it for you but you have to pay for it. UTI charges Rs100 per buy & sell transaction while ICICI bank charges 1.25% brokerage (add service tax) instead of 0.8% (add service tax). They will also deduct 10% TDS on short term profit. We have to pay account maintenance charge of Rs 1000 per year. Further some of the shares you will not eligible to buy once the FII & NRI quota exceed the specified limit. (RBI will do the press release when the quota is exceeded) Currently some of the banks already exceeded quota.

For local Indians there is no restriction to buy or sell shares. Sharekhan is having lower brokerage rate compare to ICICI (0.5% vs 0.8%). Sharekhan site is faster compare to ICICI bank. Sharekhan will not have any problem for placing the order during opening & closing hour of market. ICICI takes more time for placing order during that time. Demat account charges for Sharekhan is also less (Rs 300 vs Rs 500)

For day trading ICICI bank charges (0.4%) while Sharekhan charges (0.1% per side ~ effective 0.2%)

My mother have account in ICICI & while my father have it in Sharekhan

While opening you should have Income Tax pin & your address proof. Because of the IPO fraud it takes more than one month to open an account. (My own account is not yet opened even after 2 months!) If you open an account in Sharekhan then you have to open bank account in either HDFC bank or UIT bank.

If you are looking for even lower rates then you can try
http://geojit.com But I have no experience with this site.

etrade.com
link of the same -
https://us.etrade.com/e/t/home/openanaccount?SC=NPNW92Q&WT.mc_id=NPNW92Q&WT.srch=1
पण मी ही साईट वापरली नाही आहे.
The general information I got about it is as follows.
There will be a minimum amount of money you need to invest, I suspect it is at least $2000. Each buy and sell transaction will typically cost you about $20.

The website will not let you do anything overtly illegal. You need to understand tax rules, especially if you do your own tax returns. Again a site like www.etrade.com do have online tutorials covering these topics.

Hi Sahil,
Thats super! thanks a lot ! i know its a big headache to open demat account for NRIs especially if u dont stay in big cities like London. Almost everyone wants us to personally visit the branch. Besides u have said so many disadvantages in spite of extra fee for NRIs. I think I would do tell my mom to open demat acc with sharekhan . Even I have heard that they give very good service. Thanks once again.

Prasad: You can find ton of information on Mutual Funds on the internet, if you have any specific questions about any specific fund or how to choose fund etc that would be easier to answer rather than start from Mutual Fund 101.

For starters:
Mutual Fund Basics
Mutual Funds...

सव्यसाची तू इकाॅनाॅमिक टाइम्सची साईट ट्राय कर. लिस्टिंगबद्दल नक्की माहीत नाही पण बहुतेक असेल तिथे.

savya, listing of any share takes time. even if the company is perfect on documentation, the stock exchange as well as SEBI taken their own sweet time to actually list the scrip. So in a way, no one can exactly tell you any date. typically, if everything else is ok, a scrip will be listed within 60 days of close if issue.

best luck :-)
