Yogi

I-Bondbaddal ek prashna. Tyani jithe I and EE bondmadhe comparison dili aahe tithe "Cashing" section bagh.
They say

"Can be redeemed after first 6 months.
A 3-month interest penalty applies to bonds redeemed during the first 5 years. "

What does this mean exactly ?
If you redeem after 6 months but before 5 years, there is penalty of 3 months interest. Am I right ? Also, which 3 months interest ?
Does this condition change the tax related rules like exemption from State tax ?

Asami: As per my knowledge......

"If you redeem after 6 months but before 5 years, there is penalty of 3 months interest. Am I right ? "
Yes you are right.

"Also, which 3 months interest ? "
Certainly last 3 months interest at the time when u redeem your bonds

"Does this condition change the tax related rules like exemption from State tax ?"
*I Bonds are exempt from state and local income taxes.
*When you cash savings bonds and savings notes, the institution paying the bonds will report interest earned on the bonds or notes to both you and the IRS, it is taxable Income.
*Special tax benefits are available to qualified owners of I Bonds under the Education Savings Bond Program

I hope this helps....

hmm..so basically this boils down to the fact that if you do not want to loose a cent then do not redeem for 5 years.

Also, on emore thing is, site say syou can deferred Federal tax for upto 30 years. Does it mean that you can keep reinvesting into same bond for 30 years ?

thanks yogi, Just trying to find simple and risk free ways to avoid tax in investments. So far this is the best one I've found. Hail Enron :o)

Asami:

"Does it mean that you can keep reinvesting into same bond for 30 years ? "
Yes

If u redeem ur money after 6 months and be4 5 yrs atleast u dont loose ur principle.

Try out "Interest Checking" accounts. Another safe way.

how do you decide right now that 6-8 months would be a good time to hold them for? bidding has been around the 800 mark so far from what i hear ...

Arun
Friday, July 30, 2004 - 3:42 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post  Link to this message

savyasachi: according to my knowledge, as an investment, its good to go for TCS IPO. Dont expect to get any dividents or something. Because if u see the history of Tatas, there shares not much Divident yielded. However, the brand name that matters.

As Abe said, I also read that the share would be around 800, Though they have given the band of 700 to 900, i think 800 is the moderate price. I personally have applied for some at that price only. Lets see.

I have not understood the logic of 6-8 months. Instead I would see the trend, after the allotment of shares and then decide when to dispose them off. In other words, there is no point in making the decision time bound.

Experts in this area: kindly correct me if I am wrong.

Savyasachi: in my opinion, the stock price would be somewhere near 1000, on either side. this is my prediction. and based on this only, i have quoted the price to be 800.

There are fair amount of chances, that the opening value may be on the lower side than the current band. However after the initial set back (if at all, it gets), will rise upto 1000 (plus minus here and there).

As far as retail investors are concerned, why to give a quote?
Just go for the "Cut-off" .. if it is priced less then you'll get money back!

I also think that TCS can touch 1200 in a year but may not stay there for long. (my personal opinion). My exit target is Rs 1200
In this case cut off price is as good as quoting at maximum price. Even though you quote at Rs 900 & if price is less you get money back. I will be quoting Rs900. Now it is oversubscribed almost 2 times.
Arun: as of now for Rs800 there are more applications then issue size. Think of changing bid to Rs 825.

I guess, retail investors are not having that 5% discount as other IPOs had.
So one can come out of retail investor's category and bid for more. Of course, you can not quote at cut off then.

>> I also think that TCS can touch 1200 in a year but may not stay there for long

sahil, do you want to say it will fall down from 1200? where will it settle then? 1000?
about initial shoot on opening, I got various prices. some say 1500, some say 1200. I guess, a stop loss trigger at 1200 will be better to do if it crosses 1200.
well well, all that depends on getting the shares as such..:-)

My prediction of Rs 1200 is based on the expected growth by the Software Companies. They can not maintain 40% growth consistently so price can not sustain. But when it will start going down is a million-dollar question.
I will exit above 1200 instead of stop loss. I still remember the day when software companies fell more than 40% in 2 days & there was no time to react. Similar incidences were also happened in the past ( 1992).

Any commets about Jet Airways IPO?

Saturday, February 19, 2005 - 4:53 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post  Link to this message

manya,
I think you are late if you have not applied for it...

Jet Airways IPO of at least $375 million (pl. correct if it is wrong) was fully sold within minutes of opening on Friday.

Its really good issue. The price band has been fixed between Rs 950 and Rs 1,125.

Company has grown rapidly since it began operations in 1993 and overtook state owned Indian Airlines Ltd, which for decades was a monopoly provider of domestic air service. So I feel it has good future.

Jet IPO will be closed on 24th Feb.

My comment : Issue is overpriced.

certainly it seems to be overpriced, but still the response was quite great and in fact people are bidding with the cut off value of 1125. It would be interesting see how it does in 2ndary market .. and how Jet Aiwyas does in international sector

No, I do not use any tool for tehnical analysis and I do not beleive in technical analysis. Technical analysis is done on price data only and prices (rising or falling) do not necessarily consider fundamentals of the company and industry. For the tool given on this site : You can use it for just playing around and get a feel of it. Don't invest too much money based on this tool and it's recommendations.

I had Bhagyanagr metals 500 shares. I was not follwoing this scrip and was unaware of the fact the compnay announced sub divisin of shares. I sold 50% of the holidings to book rtial profit just 2 -3 days ago. Now the stock is in No delivery zone and the record date of the subdivision on shares is 3rd of march. How my decision of booking partial profit affects. Cause normally the shares prices starts moving up with the subdivsion ( also this is in metal which is demand) Any views ? and suggestions to recover the losss if any I have incurred.

Thursday, February 24, 2005 - 1:10 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post  Link to this message

I do not follow Bhagyanagar metals. You have sold your holdings (50%) and booked the profit. Now, after division you will continue holding 1250 shares of this. (250 * 5 = 1250). Booking partial profits is the strategy followed by some. You have already booked the profit and now enjoy. You still hold some and can sell them at later stage. It all depends on your position, whether you take long term or short term on this stock.
