I take this opportunity to introduce Mrs. Anjali Kirtane as a creative writer, reseracher and a film maker. A few years back, she had made a short film based on the life of Anandibai Joshi, who was the first Indian woman doctor.Later Mrs. Kirtane authored Anandibai's biography as well. Anandibai had been to USA to study medicine in the 19th century, when even basic education was denied to women in India and going abroad was thought to be a great sin. But Anandibai fought against all odds with unmatched courage. Both the film and the biography are the products of Mrs.Kirtane's research in India and USA. They have been critically acclaimed and have won many prestigious awards as well. Currently she is working on a docudrama based on the life and work of the eminent marathi author Durgabai Bhagwat Durgabai . 'Rituchakra','Vyasaparva','Ruparanga','Lahani','Mukta','Pra sangik' and 'Pais' are some of her well-known works. She was a profound scholar and was deeply interested in the study of epics, mythology, ethnology, religion, philosophy, anthropology and literature.Durgabai was an excellent linguist who was fluent in Sanskrit,French,German,English,Bengali,Gujarati,Kannada,Marathi and Hindi. She had studied Pali to understand the Buddhist literature in its original form and translated the 'Jataka-kathas'into Marathi.By translating folk taled from various languages, she enriched the Marathi literature. In 1975, Mrs.Indira Gandhi imposed 'Emergency Rule' and supressed the fundamental rights of the citizens.Durgabai was the only Marathi author to have stood against this dictatorship and vehemently faught for reinstatement of the Democratic rule. She was sentenced to an imprisonment of 18 months. She refused to bow to any kind of pressure and stood by her principles and values all her life. Mrs. Kirtane wishes to recapture this legendary writer on celluloid. The duration of the film would be about 60 mins. and the estimated cost is ca. Rs. 9 lacs. A portion of this film has already been shot last year with Durgabai ,Vikram Gokhale,Padmaja Phenani- Jogalekar,Dilip Prabhavalkar and Pratibha Ranade. Durgabai was strictly against accepting monetory help from the Government. She always held that artists should not accept grants or awards from the Government so that they are under no Governmental obligations. She maintained that artists'freedom was valuable which should not be lost at any cost. She herself never accepted any award except the Sahitya Academy Award which was awarded to her before the Emergency and a few Lifetime Achievements Awards confered upon her by Literary groups and NGOs working abroad. Since we are of the same opinion,we had promised Durgabai that we would never accpet any kind of help from the Government for the completion of this film. Therefore we appeal to the culturally aware organizations and citizens for the financial assistance. Even a Re.1 contributed towards this cause will help keeping Durgabai's memories alive. We sincerely feel that Durgabai's life will inspire generations to come. We need people like her to guide and help us fight the evils in Indian society. We are sure that our voice would be heard and you would generously donate for this noble cause. For more information, plz contact, Chinmay Damle (chinmay_d@hotmail.com) or Mrs. Anjali Kirtane (+91-22-2422 3676)

Dear Friends, This is an appeal to all who can help. I'm writing for the sake of a friend whose 12-year old daughter has been diagnosed with 'Turner's Syndrome'. This is a genetic aberration manifesting into bodily growth inconsistent with the of the child. The name of the family & the child has been purposely withheld at this stage for the sake of the child's future. The treatment advised by the doctors, after all the reports of the most modern tests available, is hormone replacement therapy where the inconsistent growth is suppressed and the synergistic growth is promoted. The treatment involves 730 injections (one-per-day) over a period of two years and each ampoule costs approx. Rs. 1,000/-. The entire treatment is going to cost somewhere around Rs. 800,000/- and is clearly beyond the reach of the parents. A few of us friends have got together to try and help them in this situation. We have decided to appeal to all possible sources and put together maximum amount possible for the child. We are appealing to people to sponsor one ampoule each and also appeal, in turn, their own friend-circle / charitable trusts / etc. that may be in a position to help. Would you be in a position to offer any help in this case? The name of the patient, the mode of payment, etc. will be revealed in case you decide to help. My only request is to garner as much help as possible and help save the life a creative child from ruining. Apart from actual help, your inputs on taking this effort further are welcome. I look forward to your earliest response. With kind regards, Raja Pundalik pundalik_nsk@sancharnet.in

This is for people who want to help people who r really in need of help. I visited Jagriti Blind School for girls, in Alandi yesterday. I liked the school and the way they r managing it. My classmate/blind-friend Mr. Dewaba Pawar is a president of NFBM (National Federation Of Blind Maharashtra). The school has hostel, boarding facility(food), computer rooms, activity rooms and offices. There are 103 blind girls living there, all r from rural areas.(The youngest one is 5 years old). They r in need of funds for new school and hostel building. I spent a whole day with them and had gone to see their new site too. People r really trustworthy and needy. I wanted to make sure about their integrity, that's why I did not post any message before personally visiting that place. Here is their website www.nfbm.org Pl. let me know who all r interested in helping them and who can suggest/guide me a better way of helping them. If u need more info. please do not hesitate to contact me. Pl. note the donations qualify for Income tax deduction.

This is for people/friends living in USA. NFBM (Blind Organization mentioned above) is registered with Maharashtra Foundation. People who r living in USA will also be eligible for a tax benefit, if they help NFBM thru Maharashtra Foundation. Please come forward and provide ur valuable help for the noble cause. U can help using internet. Thanks.
|
If you want to donate any funds, go to www.mfusa.org There is address to send your check(s). You should attach a letter clearly mentioning the Organization you want to help. To receive help, the Organization has to submit (80G and FCRA forms) to Maharashtra Foundation. NFBM (Jagriti School of Blind Girls) has done so. A list of organizations can be found on the site. Within a few days, you should get a receipt you can use for TAX declaration. Assuming 28% federal Tax, a $100 donation will return you $28... Hope the info. helps

Please help The Marathi Localization Effort ------------------------------------------- (posting on behalf of Swapnil Hajare) The MarathiOpensource was started to bring benefits of Free/Opensource softwares to the marathi speaking people by making the software interface as well as functioning available in Marathi. Before this, the marathi localization was started by the Indictrans team (see www.indictrans.org) which is a team of developers working as a non-profit setup in localization. I will try and summarise the entire movement from beginning. First, let me introduce the concept of OpenSource. Actually, although this group is named marathiopensource, it will be more correct to say that we work in Free/Opensource softwares (FOSS for short). There is difference between Free and Opensource software and the difference is significant enough to be mentioned specifically. This is a localization group. Localization means bringing a particular software into one's own language. Note that this is not ONLY translation (see 3rd para). The process basically involves adapting the software behaviour to suit that particular language/culture. E.g. localizing a software into Hindi includes, say, making that software understand data format in Hindi, currency, sort order etc. and many other things. Those softwares which are designed to be extended to other languages/cultures, are called as "internationlized". This is a complementary process to Localization. You will find more info at this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internationalization_and_localization The basic motivation behind localization is to bring benefits of technological advancements into once own language. In a country like India where merely 10% (or perhaps less?) people can understand/talk english, it is the tool to make technology accessible to remaining 90% or more people. One may also see this as one way of preserving our rich heritage. We wish to bridge the digital divide created by the language barrier. I want to stress this point again that localization doesn't mean translation only. Localization has many domensions like localized calenders and date format, currency, measurements, numerals, etc. It also involves testing out the translations, review of localized interfaces. Ofcourse the first goal of any localization team is to translate a complete desktop environment like GNOME (www.gnome.org) or KDE (www.kde.org) into their own language. The umbrella organisation for all localization teams across India is the indlinux project (see www.indlinux.org) which was the first effort of localizing GNU/Linux into Hindi. We all have got technical support from this project which is lead by Karunakar. After finishing my engineering in 2003, I started working with Prof Shah at his other house on localization of some softwares like yudit (www.yudit.org), drgeo(www.ofset.org) into marathi. This is when we started calling us Indictrans team. Prof Jitendra Shah is the founder/funder of this team. He paid us from his pocket to carry out the work. We later did some Govt. and Non-Govt sector small projects more info on which can be found on the website. Indictrans came out with initial GNOME desktop in Marathi. With initial That was a liveCD named "gnubhaaratii" based on Morphix. That was first marathi GNU/Linux desktop.Response to this CD was good and we got newspaper coverage number of times. But due to limited resources, we could not really scale it up in a big way.One majot contribution of Indictrans team is Gargi opentype font which is the first freely available Marathi Unicode OpenType font (free here means free for use/distribution and this font is released under GPL - http://www.gnu.org/licenses/licenses.html#GPL). Meanwhile our projects in free/opensource especially the DJMS Unicode migration and voterlist search engine for Election Commission earned a lot of goodwill for FOSS in Govt of Maharashtra. Looking at Prof Shah's work so far, Ministry of IT (MIT) Central Govt asked him to propose a project for bringing together all the localization efforts to deliver the benefits of this localised system to the end user. Hence janabhaaratii came into existence. janabhaaratii is the TDIL (www.tdil.mit.gov.in) funded initiative whose main objective is "development, deployment and community building for localised free/opensource softwares". Please see www.janabhaaratii.org.in for more details. As part of janabhaaratii project, we took forward marathi localization work which was halted for some time. We joined hands with marathiopensource group lead by Vijay Barve and others and started translating GNOME desktop. We created portal to coordinate marathi localization at (http://www.janabhaaratii.org.in:9673/marathi/l10n/). We also set up aantarabhaaratii(www.janabhaaratii.org.in/portal) as a collaborative portal to bring together all language teams across India. unfortunately due to some reasons, which are beyond scope of this document, we had resource crunch and the portal was down for some time. Now its up. We also have "janabhaaratii Live CD" which is again similar to gnubhaaratii, is a customised version of popular live CD knoppix (www.knoppix.net) with tools like fonts/keyboard and other softwares for working in Marathi. As part of janabhaaratii, we also did some training in Mantralaya of Govt of Maharashtra. We also have statet police headquarters using marathi software developed by us for their daily reports. More info about this on janabhaaratii website. This is the story so far. If you are interested in knowing what is the amount of work required to be done to create a complate Marathi desktop, what is the work done so far, please contact Priti Patil from our team, who is also on this list. I would also like to comment on current situation. We started translations of some po files (files required to be translated for localization) with some members of marathiopensource group coming forward for translations. I am so sad to see that except a few of them, nobody has given the translations yet. It has been almost 5-6 months now that we have assigned files and there is no news on the files. Those few who have translated files has done a good job, they need to keep it up. We are the technological people and though we did translations in the beginning, we always knew that they wont be usable unless they are vetted by some user/language-lovers. I agree it is a voluntary work and I have worked myself in such environment for long time, but then despite our continuous appeals if nobody is responding, then it simply means that most of the people here do not agree with the vision of localized computing and they are not able to see the power of this phenomenon which is to some extent our failure also. At the end, I appeal once again to all to come and contribute in this initiative. You dont have to be language expert, programmer, engineer etc. All that you need is love for your own language. This is the best opportunity to make sure that your language doesn't get lost in the digital age. Those who want to help can mail me personally. Swapnil K Hajare Technical Coordinator, janabhaaratii (www.janabhaaratii.org.in) CDAC Mumbai (formerly NCST) home: http://www.janabhaaratii.org.in/portal/Members/swapnil/ blog: http://dreamil.blogspot.com -------------------------------------- Please join in this effort anyway you can. There are several simple ways you can help. Even if you just try out the applications and fonts and let team know your feedback, that will go a long way to help our language.
