Wakdya: You dont need any package as such, you can directly write your own HTML code all you need to know is coordinates for mapping HotSpots on your single image file. You can use application such as Dreamwearver which will easily do this for you. Check out following links: 1. Manual HTML Hotspot 2. With Dreamweaver

Wakdya: Its not free package. Actually you can just write your own HTML using 1st link above. HTML code mhanje <HTML> you use in your webpage (.html or .htm) file. Get any HTML beginners book and you should find this as this is very basic level HTML or search on the net for HTML primer/tutorial.

this can be done in MS FrontPage as well. Frontpage is likely to be available on a Windows system. Insert a picture first using Insert picture tollbar command, Enable picture toolbar if that is hidden, click on the picture and from the picture toolbar select a hotspot and give your url (hyperlink where u want to go)

Vijaykumar, I think acrobat reader uses fonts installed on the machine. So even if you convert a document written in Devnagari into PDF, I don't think you can read it if the fonts are not installed on the viewer's machine

Nope! PDF File uses embedded fonts and should be readable without the fonts installed on the reader's machine
|
Wakdya, Don't wreak your head on dreamweaver or embedded html etc. Just use CoffeCup Imagemaker (http://www.coffeecup.com/image-mapper/) I have used that at http://www.geocities.com/prasadp77/indiatourism.html Check Indian map here. I hope you want to do smething like that

I had experienced problems reading the PDF documents with Devnagari fonts in the past. To verify what I was talking about, I did a small experiment. I converted a page from hitguj containing Devnagari script into PDF document using Adobe Acrobat Professional. It looked fine. I deleted all the devnagari fonts from my machine. Then it showed garbage for the devnagari characters. I was able to see the document fine after reinstalling the shivaji fonts. This is what Acrobat has to say about this.. 'A font is embedded only if it contains a setting by the font vendor that permits it to be embedded'. So it looks like Shivaji font vendors don't have a setting that will allow those fonts to be embedded, or there must be some option in Acrobat to explicitely tell it to embed the fonts. Kiran, can you throw some light on this?
|
Before I posted my message I did same experiment as Naatyaa.Pdf document was prepared with pdf995 software freely available on net.I deleted shivaji fonts from windows font directory after preparing pdf and I had no problem in reading it.

exactly.. so the difference in above two experiments is 'the software' which was used to prepare the pdf. I used Acrobar distillar to create PDFs and those show up fine on any -non-font installed' system. I used OpenOffice software to create PDFs which does not show up with no fonts. so software plays some role inside this... Kiran, any idea ? Can we force it to embed the font ?

I found an option in Adobe Distiller to tell it to always embed said fonts while creating PDF files.. So we can say that if the person who creates the PDF is careful enough, you can have a PDF document that will not have to depend on fonts to be there on the viewer's machine.

Yes, if you embed the fonts, obviously the size of the document increases. But the advantage is that you can read it anywhere. which is the initial concept of "Portable Document Format(PDF)". And yes, again it depends on the software by which you create the pdf files. A little known fact to many is that even MS Word has a setting which allows the font to be embedded inside a .doc file. Open a doc file, Click File/Save as. In the file save dialog box, (Office 2000) click Tools/General Options, you'll see a check box for Embed TTF. The last step might be different for different versions of Office. This allows the reader to even modify the document using the embedded font even though it is not installed on the client machine.
