Seema thx,

What you are looking for could be achieved by controlling Depth-Of-Field (DOF)

check this out

http://www.dofmaster.com/backgroundblur.html
http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/950/depth-of-field.html

There are ample resources on the net that explain this in great detail.Just google on "Depth of Field"

Hi, Question regarding zoom, minimum focussing distance and DoF.
Is there any formula to calculate minimum focussing distance from the subject for a lens having a particular zoom?
For example, I have a Nikon F80 with Nikkor 20-80. At the max zoom, i,e, 80 mm, what is the closest I can go to the subject and still acheive focus? Is this distance determined by DoF?
I wanted to shoot something (okay, a hair brush! similiar to
this) at a very shallow DoF value. Camera was at about 3-4 inches from the subject, autofocus did not work, so tried manual focus, but no success :-(
What is the solution in this situation? Would a higher value of zoom solve the problem? How do you decide when you want a macro lens?

I believe Minimum focusing distance is given by manufactr. I realy don't go deep into theory..I think for your lense it should be 3 ft. Your problem can be resolved by adding closup lense (Cheaper and comes in various strength) or extention tube ( little expensive and comes in different lengths ) or go for macro lense which is expensive ..
I have Nikon N80 and 28-105 Nikon lense when I added closeup filter minimum focusing distance reduced by 80% before purchasing can try these options at photo shop or at photographer....Cheapest home made solution is try to use magnifying glass ( need to hold real tight ) result won't be great but u will get idea.

One more thing u can check if your lense has Macro switch..if yes set it and Min. focus distance will 6 inches..

BEE and Nalini nice pics..White object on black background is always tough to shoot...little shadow on the face should give dramatic effect and should make it more immpresive..just my thoughts
Here is the statue carved in chalk ( hight 3 cms )by my friend Praful Gawli..I havn't taken his permission before posting, I hope he will not get angry..This I took in Fluroscent light

Arati, if you know the aperture size and the f-number of your lens, then you can calculate the focal length using the formula:
(focal length) = (f-number)*(aperture size)

Try playing with the f-number and the aperture size and you might succeed in taking photograph of the hair brush.

Hi Vishal and Mawla, thanks for the prompt response.
Mawla, what do you mean by a close up lens?
My lens does not have a macro.
Mawla, a magnifying glass does look interesting, but holding the hand steady looks to be a challenge. I would definitely try it.
My question is, for this particular situation, which would be a better option, a just a higher zoom lens would suffice or a macro lens is required?
Vishal, could you elaborate on the formula you have given? what metric system to use? which figures exactly?
I want a shallow DoF, so i am looking at what more equipment I would require to acheive this.

Hi Arti and all,

Here I took two pics both took with 70-300 Nikon lense which is non-macro i.e normal lense
1st I took with Focal length with around 80mm, F 4.2, shutter 1/2 sec. where minimum focus distance was 48 inches.

The second I took with all same settings but added Hoya +4 closeup lense, Where I got minimum focus distance 9 inches.

Here I didn't play with any apprture and shutter. If you play with shut and app you will get more DOF. I believe Arti's problem is resolved. This closeup lense I got for 70 RM which is around 750Rs.
