Mawla,

Prashant..colours are as seen in picture..neither white no yellow.. and no improvement in photoshop at all..

I did not mean you used PS or any other application, just wanted to know.

if i set my camera on fully manual mode...does camera metering helps?

Manual mode is just that, you set everything manually. Modern cameras have some way of indicating if it is over or under. However a manual mode user already knows (should know) if he want to over-or-under expose and by how much.
I prefer incident metering most of the time and use a handheld meter which doubles up as a spot meter so my preferd mode of use is manual, it is fast. There are other ways too.

In the same light, an external meter and camera meter should give the same EV/exposure setting metered off a grey card. They are calibrated to read off a subject of average reflectance like a grey card. Try this: put your camera in manual mode with no compensation. Meter off the grey card, and it should not indicate any 'wrong exposure' blinks (each has his own way of showing this, canon-nikon etc). Now meter off a black shirt or dark object and then white wall. It starts warning you. All your camera does is it gives a reading for subject with average reflectance (18% grey). And now you know why your snow was either over exposed or was dull grey. :-)

You should check how much your camera meter is OFF. Most of the D70s under expose, D80 over expose and Rebel/5D is in between. Pentax 645Nii which I had for some time had the best metering, always spot on and matching with external spot meter. But then all these equipment give us is a starting point and you have to work on it. Check
this image out, no equipment will give the right exposure for a situation like this, it is the person using it who has to work on it.

The people who joined the workshop last weekend were surprised to know how easy it can be to avoid a lot of work on the computer if you are careful in the field. Most of them were using GREEN-BUTTON mode and the images were always a hit or miss.

BTW, we were waiting for you to join but you did not come :-). I will update the page tonight.

Arati...lovely pink colour..object is is little out of focus.

Prashant it is very useful info...looks like Now I am in sync with exposure.

For following picture, I use halogen lamps with tungstone WB, I took exposure by seting camera in Auto mode and gray card. I add 1 stop and got EV and set the F16 and use same EV. color looks exactly as the flower, I am happy with the result..shot completed and in 15 mins its on MB, no work in photoshop except crop and frame. Please critiq this one..need to improve skills.

Let me try this in different object, light condition and different focal length and will ask more question.

Some time you arrange workshop in Australia will surely join ;)

This is exactly what I meant. If you take care and not use your camera as a 'machine gun' then you get it right when you click the shutter.
Looks nice to me.

PK Beautiful pictures...
How do you expose landscape with varaity of colours/ tones and waterfalls with lots of black stone or bright sky.
Do you use ND filters for waterfalls, I don't see clouds behind trees overexposed.

Prashant,
What I suggest is to take
this photo as a case study and let us know what you took as a midtone. Was there any compensation? if so, any reason?
Also did you check how much difference was there in incident metering compared to reflective? Obvisouly on which area.
This can give us some insight.

To others,
What do you all say?

Incident metering reads the intensity of light falling on the subject. It can be used by placing it near the subject and pointing it toward the camera. The exposure is based on the light reaching the subject irrespective of the reflectance or color of that subject.
Reflected metering reads the intensity of light reflecting off of the subject. This scheme can easily go wrong because of variances in tonality, color, contrast, background brightness, surface textures and shape.
If you are using Spot meter (type of reflective meter), take a few readings around and then you have do your own averaging and must estimate the reflectance of the target and adjust the reading accordingly.

MawLa,
Nice exposure. Though it kinda looks all staged (black velvet). Nice and sharp details. Good DOF.

Prashant,
Very nice images.

Dhumketu,
Harishchandra-gad trek..kokan-kada ...nice!! nostalgia! Its been a while! Enjoy!!
