Chatur: IRS has free secure site to file ur taxes.....so you can use that.

A good rule of thumb would be to download taxact program for free, do all the tax filing on ur desktop get the understanding but do not do e-file as u have to pay. Once u did ur homework and got the approx figures of return u can do same on IRS website and file for free as its secure site.

For State tax just fill up the form u get from library for free and u can send it or else if ur state offers free tax e-file u can as well use that after doing ur homework :-)

Last yr I used taxact to file federal and state as at that time IRS did not have e-file service. But this yrs I would probably use IRS service :-)

I hope this helps.....

I need a clarification regarding filing tax return.

My parents are in India. They are retired and are dependent on me. Can I claim them as dependants while filing tax returns?

Correspondingly, can I claim myself to be "Head of household"?

SB - Could you please explain how?

Form W-4 says -

Head of household : Generally, you may claim head of household filing status on your tax return only if you are unmarried and pay more than 50% of the costs of keeping up a home for yourself and your dependent(s) or other qualifying individuals.

So if I try to claim myslef as head of household here, I am asked to fill in details of dependents in the taxact software which I downloaded from taxact.com. I have received conflicting information about this "Head of household" stuff and hence wanted to get clarifications.

majha bhau (on H-1) aani vadil (On B-1/2) are in LA. If he has to file tax what forms should he use> is 1040 NR-EZ for him Can he claim my father as dependent. What are the exemptions and st. deductions. How is it different from F-1?

your brother cannot claim your father as a dependent since dependents are required to have SSN/TIN. Secondly, your brother needs to file 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ but not the NR Form even if he is present in US for part-year. But for state he needs to file 540NR if he did not reside for Full Year in California.

eliza, from what I have recently read, you brother can claim your parents as dependents provided they are here for than 181 days and they have a tax id number. You can get the tax id for those on b1b2. I don't know the process to do it though.

2. DCU has free tax preparation facility for DCU members. (not sure about free e-filing)

One more hassle e-filing :o(
mi 2 thikani (hrblobk & eztaxreturn) e-filing try kele 10$ ni 20$ bharun pan irs ne te somehow reject kele without specifying any reason. Thus now I'll have to paper fax it anyways :o(

People, do not waste your money for the sake of e-filing, it is not a straighforward job.
If it is really available free, then you can try otherwise don't pay for that because the service provider is not responsible for any rejection.

most definitely answer to this question is NO, but no harm in asking:
can one write off investment(like in immovable assets) in India while filing returns in US?
is there any way out of it,instead of using post tax money?

By The Way, "she" ki "paach she" :-) hi kaay range aahe :-)

maze $15 interest aahe ani tax filing even paper file karayche mhatle ithun (from Austria) tari mala tevdhach kharch yeil. so I'm skipping that.

But Savya, tujhya case madhe mala kalat nahiye nakki kaay kele pahije. mala vatate simple paper file karun taak. (I assume you r in India) mhanje form bharun simply postane pathavun de, ugach katkat nako. tuze "she-pachshe" rupayat kaam houn jaail :-)
