Mitrho, Report Card for my just bought Buick LeSabre OverAll Rating - A+ Milage - 20 Miles/gl Experience - Too good What I liked - everything - drive, suspenction, roomyness, visual indication when to change oil, battery. Concerns - no visual indication to show open door. Also it takes little longer to start the cold engine. -Zakkas

If anyone in the USA is planning to buy a Honda Accord in near future, please hold off till October-2002. An all new 2003 line-up of Honda Accords is going to be released in October-2002. Great looks, bigger size, a little stepped up engine output (on the V4 engines only. The V6 engine is a carryover from the present), more standard features. The interior gets a big upgrade... more on the lines of a semi-luxury midsize car like a Passat, rather than the run of the mill Taurus/Intrepid/Camry interiors. If you can hold off on a new purchase, do so and research the new Accord line-up.

Here is one good site if you are plannig to purchase a car http://www.edmunds.com/
|
i think edmunds is a much better one than kelly...which i think is baised big time for the dealers... generally speaking, i have found that kbb quotes prices about 1000$ higher than edmunds for cars in the 8-10K $ price range.. i bought my car a couple of months ago, and saying this based on resaerch done at that time....

Samryaseth, US maQao Aaplyaalaa yao}na Anaok vaYao- JaalaItÊ AaNaI Aaplyaa message va$na trI manual gaaDI GaoNyaacaI hI AaplaI pihlaIca vaoL nasaavaI Asao vaaTto. %yaatUna I have myself never owned a manual drive but have gone hunting for manual drive cars with friends . %yaamauLo Aaplyaalaa kaya iTpa doNaarÆ trIpNa qaÜDa AagaavaupNaa krtÜÊ caUk BaUla doNao GaoNao :-) Generally speaking, like you said, "normally" jao checks krtÜ tovaZo KUp Jaalao , regardless of whether it is a manual or an automatic. (1) Exterior: Look for dings and dents. (Every used car will have some, so be reasonable). New paintjob means something is shady. Look to see if the tires are uniformly worn out. Look for undercarriage rust, so on and so forth. (2) Interior: As per your aesthetic appeal. Dont forget to lift the floormats and look below them. (3) Inside the hood: Actually pop the hood to see for leakages, rusting, brittle belts and hoses etc. Be reasonable in this assessment because the vehicle is afterall a used vehicle. If the mileage on your prospective car stands near the 30K, 45K, 60K, 75K or 90K interval, it means you have a big servicing/tuneup coming up. Ask the owner if the vehicle has already been serviced per the 30K/45K/60K/75K routine servicing norms specified by the manufacturer. If he hasnt, then you have adjust your offer accordingly, to bear the cost of the big servicing on yourself. If your car has 60K+ on it, ask if the timing belt and the serpentine belt have been replaced at approxly 60K. The rear differential (only in RWD vehicles) needs a servicing at about 60K, so ask if that has been done. Ask about when was the battery last replaced (4 years or 60K miles means a new battery makes sense). Ask when the transmisison fluid was replaced - this is MOST important for manual transmission cars because the state of the tranny fluid depends entirely on the previous user's driving habits. (4) Electricals: Check electricals - see if the power windows roll up and down at the same speed, verify that the headlamps do not dim while you are using other electricals like pwr windows, wipers etc. If they do, you probably have a new battery coming up soon. (5) Actual test drive: Just listen to the engine idle for a couple of minutes. That itself tells a lot of the story. Hit the clutch, let the engine run without engaging and listen to the engine. Apart from the regular igarNaI of the engine, you shouldnt hear any knocks, pings, scratches or grinds. And remember a first drive in a car not your own is always different and refreshing. So dont fall for the change in the ride. (5A) Suspension - roll down the windows as you drive and and listen for rhythemic vibrations or humming sounds. Identify if these are coming from the suspension/tires or from the engine. Ideally speaking dont buy a car whose engine hums or rocks. Tires and suspension can be repaired relatively cheaply. (5B) For MANUAL drives, Gear shifts should be reasonably smooth (no thunks or jerks should come from the gearbox, although your driving style also may have a part to play here). You shouldnt feel like the cluth is slipping - punch the accelarator and the car should respond reasonably. You should be able to feel the clutch grip and thrust the car linearly, NOT logarithmically. Any slippage means future repairs. Cable operated clutches - better check the state of the clutch cable - you may have a replacement to do if your clutch makes the car jerk. For hydraulic clutches, you can probably do nothing to inspect. Depend on your experience and judgement to assess the clutch by pressing the clutch pedal on and off, and the engine response thereof. If the time between the moment you change gears and the moment the vehicle actually responds (transmission connects) is a bit long, then you might have a worn out transmission. (5C) Accelaration - see if the engine responds well to pedal thrusts, see how the engine responds to "cluth throws" and "half clutch" starts if the owner permits you. For a manual transmission car, the value is a little less than its automatic counterpart. Confirm your offer by referring the details of your prospective car on a few evaluation websites like KBB, Autobytel and Edmunds. By the way, what car are you eyeing? If you could let me know the model, year and mileage, we could look at other aspects like recall history, maintenance schedules etc for it.

Samrya "Inside the hood" - If the car leaks oil from its crank-case, or if the transmission chamber leaks, then believe me there is no dealer in the world who can cover that up. Nominal [kDcao itkDcao oil stains vaogaLo AaNaI ho big leaks vaogaLo . You'll realize something is wrong the moment you peep inside. So dont worry and trust your eyes. "Mechanic check" - I dont think a mechanic is necessary if you are buying a 5-6 year old Civic. They say you can weld shut the hoods of these Civics and Corollas and never look at them all your life. Just use your own discretion and judgement and you should be fine. "Battery"- lucky you. Battery life depends on many things. I'm assuming you stay in a cold place. The most important factor for battery-life is if the car gets parked in the garage or in the open, and how many times does it start/stop in an average cold day. (A pizza deliverywala will on-off his engine 50 times a day whereas a normal office-going desi will start the car AaplaM DÜ@yaava$na paNaI 2-3 times a day - ekda office laa jaatanaaÊ ekda office hUna yaotanaa AaNaI saMQyaakaLI kQaItrI baayakÜnao BaajaI Gyaayalaa pazvalao tr tovha ...conclusion, you never know the state of the battery, so 60K miles or 4-5 years is a safe window to assume you need a replacement. "Cable operated clutches" My opinion is all Jap cars gave up cables a long time ago. So you may rest in peace on this one (97 Civic I mean). Personal opinion: Mazda MX-6 is one hell of a car. If you have a Mazda dealer in your proximity (puZo maagao genuine Mazda components laagalaoca tr ) , then buying an MX-6 would be worth it. My friend owns a 240SX but havent been in touch with him for a long long time. Give me a few days if you can, and I'll let you know about the vehicles you mention above. SAVYA, aajkal kuthe gul astos?

Samrya, 96-97 Civic Coupe/Hatchback brief highlights: Excellent cars. 4 engine types, dont know which one you'll get, but all 4 basically in the 105 -125 BHP range. Excellent fuel eff, great engines, good chassis, good durability and all that good stuff Civics have been associated with. On the down side, a weak engine and a little high road-noise. (But since you intend to use this vehicle as a commuter, rather than a hauler or a tourer, these shouldnt matter). On the 96-97 models there were just 3 recalls and none of them major. (Passenger airbags were improperly assembled on SOME batches of cars that could have prevented proper deployment). 3 areas of customer complaints: (A) Some cars leaked water in the (front) doors. (B) Some cars had bad seatbelts, but the issue was repairable at any dealership. (C) Installing third party audio systems could break some of the electrical functions of the car like keyless entry system and internal dome light. Repair costs are a bit on the high side given its Japanese origins. Basically for a 5 year old car, it may be prudent to know the following AVERAGE repair costs an owner may incure if things go wrong (if they go wrong at all): (A)Clutch, pressure plate and bearing repair ~ $500 (B) CV joints ~ $500 (C) Timing belt ~ $200 (D) Exhaust system ~ $400 (E) Alternator ~ $300 (F) A/C ~ $500. (G) Shock abs/suspension ~ $700. But on the whole this should be an excellent choice for the type of usage you mention above. (Personal recommendation, the 2 door DX hatchback). Hope this helps.

Samir, I dont own a Sedona, neither does anyone I know well. However I have been doing a lot of reading about the Sedona for a while. Hope my opinion helps. Kia Sedona is an excellent value for money. Since you plan to buy a new Sedona, you dont stand to lose much. As you probably already may have researched, (1) It has an excellent crash rating. The best Frontal, Side Impact and rollover ratings awarded to the minivan class. (2) The price is unmatched by any manufacturer. (3) The best thing is the Hyundai warranty (Kia is a Hyundai company) that the vehicle comes with - 5Y/60K bumper to bumper! Cant beat that. (4) 5 year roadside assistance, 10 year drivetrain warranty. (5) The build quality is above average for its class. The overall quality ratings for 2003 have much improved over 2002 and previous models. So even if the 2003 looks similar to the 2002 and carries the same engine, there is a difference in the build quality. You probably wont find dashborad indicators lighting up for no reason, or fuses blowing for no reason or the AC konking off for no reason as was the case with the older models. (6) The 195 BHP engine runs on 87/86 grade gas without any issues. (7) Roomy. Definitely roomy for 7 average Indian adults. (8) All the standard protection features - dual airbags, side impact door beams etc etc (side curtain airbags NOT an option, though). The negatives are (1) Fuel consumption, hovers around 15-17 mpg. Perhaps attributed to the high basic curb weight. This is the heaviest minivan in the market for some reason. (2) The base LX model which you mention ($20K) misses a few basic minivan features. The 2nd and 3rd row seats are not exactly portable, and takes some effort to remove/move around. (3) Not very good reliability figures for 2002 and previous models...BUT since you are buying a new Sedona, you should be OK for the first 5 years atleast on the reliability/maintenance front. (4) Depreciation. As with all minivans (exception Japanese minivans), this one depreciates pretty quickly too. (5) Traction control not available, and ABS is not standard. On the whole, a very good value for money. A lot of consumers and professional reviewers have given a thumbs up for the 2003 Sedona. There is a good reason to be confident about buying a new Sedona. You do not stand to lose anything. If you need any specific details or have queries, feel free to email me. All the best!

sathi: in addition to where you live, insurance is significantly affected by: driving history, age, type of car, whether you or single or married etc.... so its almost impossble to generalize. if you are a new driver, single, under 25, and want comprehensive coverage, you will almost certainly get a much better deal with Progressive. companies like all-state, state farm, farmers' etc. give discounts for also selecting renter's insurance

sathi, i have changed my insurance company twice in last 8 months and i will suggest try GEICO. progressive is much more expensive ($400 in my case) for exact same coverages with exact same deductibles. (i come under all those categories... new driver, single, under 25 etc.., although this is in Washington, that might make a difference)

Sathi, make sure you understand different coverage types in the insurance. Also, the place where you stay (even cleveland downtown vs suburbs will make lot of diff), make/year/color of the car, your age/driving experience makes lot of difference in the insurance amount. Red coupes have higher insurace. The age/marital status makes lot of diff. My insurance came down by $50 a month when I crossed 25. Geico is one of the cheapest and reliable insurance.
