has anyone taken a microwave oven from the US to India? if so:
- how did you transport it (i mean through an airline flight)?
- is the transformer (110-220V) easily available (even for the higher watt ratings of a microwave oven)
- if it needs repair in india, what are the options?
i think this has come up on some BB before, but i could not find it, hence posting it here. thanks in advance

Abe: The transformers in India are not that good in quality eventually affecting the performance of your electronic equipments. But you can get good quality cheap transformers from here itself which can be used for such electronic devices. Regarding repairs - Many a times you wont need repairs for "actual" life of the equipment unless it is used in very poor conditions. If at all the equipment breaks then its hard to find a "reliable" technician who would "only" repair and not substitute some good part with some generic part.
Based on personal exp. hope this helps....

Abe: instead of taking microwave from US, I will recommend to buy the one in India itself. The main reason is the transformer. Transformers in India, are really horrible. More than helping the gadgets, they harm them. So better not rely on Indian transformers. I am experiencing the same in India currently, especially for my DVD player.
The second thing is now-a-days, in India, you get high quality microwaves and there is variety as well to select.

a quick check on the price - a good microwave in the US would cost somewhere between 50-100$ depending on the power rating and cubic capacity. a good one in india would cost about 20k Rs (~550$), which sounds ridiculous. besides you are generally likely to end up with a conventional oven incorporated inthe same device, something that i certainly am not looking for. but thanks for the heads-up on the transformers arun
