Samir: you have wrong information. There are cases when you can do a drop box but not always.

Jaar US visa 1st time ghenyaa saathi jaat asal aani if you are not over certain 60 or may be 55 age limit then you will have to be in 'queue line' and go thru whole process. If you already have H1 or visitor visa then second time its just a drop box unless there is some prob. Drop box mhanje passport ghari nahi pathvaat....sakali jaun drop box karaychaa aani same day at 4 (teh sangtil tevhaa) jaun collect karaychaa. After u collect ur passport and PLEASE do watch out for any kind of errors on your stamped visa.

I hope this helps....

Are Sameer tech sangtoy re. Marchmadhe Line madhe ubhe rahavech lagte nomatter Drop Box aso va naso. Drop Box cha artha evadhach ki tumhi interviwsaathi thambat nahi. They take your docs and ask to come at specific times like 3 or 4. So you go and collect ur passport at that time.

Pun atta change kelay. Passport courier ne ghari pathvatat.

Hi All,

Right now I am on H4 and I want to convert it to F1. I have a question regarding F1 stamping. I am in a dillema whether I should go to India for stamping or do it here through INS.

From India :
1> I have legal H4 extention and I94 card but my visa stamping on the passport is expired. So if my F1 gets rejected and then I decide to do H4 stamping then wheather there will be any problems in doing so? What documents should I carry for F1 stamping and if not F1 then H4 stamping?

From USA:
1> What is the procedure to apply for F1 to INS.
2> Now a days how long it takes to get F1? Becoz I've heard that it takes from 3 months to 1yr. I already have experience of INS since it took 6/7months for my H1.
3> Previously I did my H1 from INS, but since I am not and was never on project and haven't done stamping and don't have those papers in my hand. Will it be ok if I apply for H4 to F1 change? or will H1 create any problem, like I should first cancel my H1 etc

Please reply.

Manalim: => check

http://travel.state.gov

for general visa information.

and

http://travel.state.gov/visa;foreignstuden.html

for documents that you NEED for F1 visa stamping.

(sic) As of TODAY, the state department has issued and order that for F1 visa's, the student has to apply from the country of his/her citizenship only (this may or may not apply to conversion from H4 to F1...better enquire with the university).....so says the IES officer at my university.....check with the International Education Advisor at your university about the options that you have......the laws are changing everyday and they will best guide you as they have the latest information.

Beyond all the documents mentioned on the web site, it may be a good idea to carry

# 1. A letter of recommendation from your academic department head and your advisor, stating that you are a promising student, that you are not working in military /sensitive research areas and that the university would really like you have you around.

# 2. Register for the semester you plan to attend school and obtain a proof of registration from the administration office (since you are already in the US, this should be easy). This will help you prove that you are really going to attend school and are a bonafide student or whatever.

Under normal circumstances, the above two will not be necessary. But in today's situation, the varsities are advising all students to take these and other documents for F1 visa stamping.

Manalim: after talking to your advisor if u have a option to be here without your F1 being stamped but have all papers with you then 'DO NOT' send ur passport to INS or go out of country in current situations. Just be in a valid status with all papers with you. Next year u can always make a trip to India n get ur passport stamped :) Best of luck :)

Yogya, he ghe....some emails sent out by the IES here....they are in chronological order....
------------------------
New visa application procedure in force as of November 16, 2001.

The State Department has implemented a new visa screening procedure for
non-immigrant visa applicants from certain countries. We have
confirmation that the new procedure went into effect on Nov. 16 but
there is currently no confirmation from the State Department concerning
what countries are affected.

Here is what we do know:
1. The policy affects non-immigrants between 18 and 45 years old
applying for visas (including F, J, H, O visa applicants).
2. The procedure will add up to 20 working days to the visa application
period for these applicants.

There have been several reports on this topic in the media in the last
week; some listing possible countries and others just referring to 25 or
26 countries with predominantly Arab or Muslim populations. The
"Washington Post" reported that the list of countries includes
Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Indonesia,
Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Oman,
Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the
United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

Until the State Department either releases the details of the cable
implementing the procedure or provides some additional information,
there will be confusion about the implementation of this rule. We should
have more information within the next few weeks but meanwhile, there are
already a few reports of students encountering difficulties.

Areas of concern:
1. Obviously, the biggest area of concern is what countries are
affected.
2. We do not know how this rule affects automatic visa revalidation for
students traveling to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. In the past,
F-1 and J-1 students could use an expired visa to re-enter the U.S.
after trips of less than 30 days to these border countries. Until we
have confirmation that this process is not affected, please contact IES
before leaving the U.S. with an expired visa (or a visa with no
remaining entries).
3 Some media reports have indicated that the policy only affects men
between the ages listed above. However, there have already been cases
of women being told they will need to wait for a visa to be issued. We
will assume both are affected unless we learn otherwise.
4. Although the ^Ówaiting period^Ô of up to 20 working days has been
confirmed, it seems likely that with the high volume of applicants over
the winter holidays that the period may be longer.

All students traveling over the winter break who plan to apply for a
U.S. visa should check with the U.S. consulate abroad BEFORE making
travel plans and again before leaving the US. Check on the application
procedure, processing times, and documents needed. Some consulates may
close for periods of time due to security threats so make applying for a
visa your priority. Some consulates have posted updates on their web
page:
http://www.travel.state.gov/links.html

You should also have an advisor in IES review your documents with you
before making travel plans. If possible, purchase refundable or
changeable tickets and again, when you do travel, make applying for the
visa your priority.

-----------------------------------------
Subject: IESNEWS -- Special Bulletin #2/Travel Advisory, 11/19/01 (fwd)

Third Country Processing in Border Posts Temporarily Halted.

Please note: this message applies to all non-immigrants from all
countries planning trips to Canada or Mexico over Thanksgiving break.

The State Department Visa Office informed us today that non-resident
Third Country Nationals will not be able to apply for visas at Mexican
and Canadian border posts. It is uncertain how long this change in
policy will be in effect.

What does this mean? It means that the US Consulates in Canada and
Mexico will only accept applications from citizens and legal residents
of Canada and Mexico. Students from other countries who have made
appointments in Canada or Mexico for visa processing should confirm
their appointment with the Consulate before leaving the U.S. It is our
understanding that the Consulates have canceled or are in the process of
canceling, appointments for the near future.

Students planning trips to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean who do not
have a valid visa stamp in their passport should defer their travel
plans if possible until this situation is resolved. If you must make the
trip, contact IES before leaving the US.

We will inform you over IESNEWS as more information becomes available.
------------------------------------------
(2)Suspension of "Automatic Re-Entry" Provisions:
Under 22 CFR Section 41.112(d), it was possible for
foreign nationals to re-enter the U.S. after a trip of
less than 30 days' time to Canada or Mexico
without holding a visa stamp in the passport. Under
this provision of the law individuals holding a valid
passport and a valid I-797 (Notice of Approval) were
permitted to re-enter the U.S. even though they might
not have a visa stamp reflecting the classification
noted on the I-797.
The State Department is now telling us that your
employees can no longer rely on this provision. This
is because the State Department is concerned that
applicants from the 25 countries listed in Section

(3) below may be subject to additional security
clearances. In the future, therefore, all individuals
travelling to Canada or Mexico must have
a valid visa stamp in their passport which notes the
same visa classification (e.g., H-1B, L-1, etc.) as
their Notice of Approval.
