We have come to USA about a year ago. I used to
work in India. But because of my husband's
visa status I can not work yet.
I think there are many like me. I would like
to get some ideas on how you spent time. Are you
still able to keep in touch with your profession?
Any tips/suggetions for newcomers?

Hi friends,

Although I was not in the same situation, I thought of dropping a note. I got my employment authorization within a month after I arrived here. But I did not start working immediately, and that was by choice. Among other reasons (like my masters) one was that I really wanted to take some off for myself.
I really agree with Monu on her suggestions. Here in US we do have a very good community college system where you have access to many professional courses in varied fileds. Also I believe that, apart from being fun, internet can be a great aid to self-education and can contribute to self development. Keep yourself updated with latest news, latest technology. I can assure you that it is possible here, for you to be more knowledgeble about newest things in a particular area, than the person who is actually working in it.
And not the least, use this time for your hobbies, develop new interests and rediscover yourself.
YOU WILL NOT HAVE TIME FOR THESE WHEN U START WORKING.

It IS very frustrating sometimes to have this feeling of helplessness. But let me tell you that I have seen many girls around who have and are trying to overcome it. I have always adored them for their perseverence and tenacity.

So don't give up and I am sure you will make it.

I hope this was not a very heavy dose, but I sincerely wanted to share my thoughts.

Good Luck and take Care

I actually do ENVY you guys. I came to the US on a student VISA and have been working through school and right after graduating.
Make the MOST of the time available to you.
Concentrate on getting your driving license as SOON as possible. The only way to learn driving is to actually do it. And EVERYBODY gets better with practise. My colleagues still remind me of the times when I used to refuse assignments because I would have to take a left exit :-)

In most parts you have access to free libraries with a decent collection of books and videos.
How many oscar winning movies have you seen ?
How many Robert Redford/ Marlon Brando/ Hitchcock/ Martin Scorsesse movies ?
Most free libraries will carry these kind of videos.
If you WANT to get out of the house, you volunteer at the local YMCA child care facilities, local ibraries / nursing homes.
Volunteer at the Ronald McDonald house.
Join a local big brothers/big sisters and become a big sister.
Learn a foreign language at the community college.
Learn a new indian language. Teach the languages you know to other people.

I'm still on the 1950's Oscar winning movies and it is almost two years since I started!

There are so many opportunities, one just has to look and make an effort to avail those.

One suggetion from a H1 husband. This suggetion is given after our experience. And I do not mean to offend anyone.
Have kids!!!! Its fun and you LEARN a LOT. If not you will atleast learn how to be patient.
My wife who is on H4 hardly gets time to send email to her folks back in Pune, since she gave birth to our daughter on April 98.
I consider myself lucky that she choose to stay home and be a fulltime mother.

Hi Everybody on H4,

I have come in US just (?) 4 months back (of course on H4) . I may be junior to most of u but still want to tell (write) u by my own experience. Whatever mistakes I made, I think it should not happen with anyone else. First & the most important thing is forget about ur past in India i.e. how busy u were there? What more u could have done there if now u were there? Forget it coz this is is the only way to enjoy life out of India. Only remeber ur parents & all other circles in India & what they hope from u.
Don't spoil ur present & future by thinking ur (so called ) busy past in India.
Now try to spend time in doing things which u couldn't do in India right from cooking, taking care of ur health, reading, watching movies, morning (or any time ) walk, making some decorative stuff ( art work) , yoga etc. It is not at all necessary that u should do something only in ur field. Everyone of u has got many friends from different states of India - learn something from them.
Plan ur each day/ week. Plan how many new things u have decided to complete in 1 month. Otherwise after some months u will realize that I had done nothing creative in those months. And that feeling is very bad & more frustrating. So try to do something creative (not very big but u should get mental satisfaction).

So don't look for excuses. I have done all these mistakes but now trying to improve. Of course it is not possible all of a sudden. It will take some time but at least one should start.

Sorry it's a very big mail but couldn't stop my feelings.

Keep in touch.
