Boss: Where is this original article posted from? Keep in mind, it talks about "transfer of residence" which is permanant return to India and not a holiday break.

i saw it in the economic times ... these details might have appeared elsewhere too ... http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/412264.cms this one talks only of baggage, no mention of a TR - why anyone would include a laptop as part of a TR i do not know, unless the duty is lower
|
abe, it does talk about 'transfer of residence' on the second page. laptops are exempt from duty for all NRIs though..

I think this is the page we should always refer to and take printouts of the latest amendments at all the time while visiting India. http://www.cbec.gov.in/cae/customs/info-trvllrs/bagge-rules.htm Especially look at the amendments dated 2004. Thankfully the English written is readable and understandable to us. It talks about the raise in the baggage allowance from 12000 to 25000 and one free import of a laptop.

Anupama: Do check above link for duty-free allowance. Instead of portable DVD player, a laptop might be better off since it is duty-free.

Has anyone taken Microwave to India recently? Will it be duty free if its below 25000? I know they will try to cobble everything in it. It falls under Annexture II in the customes book. Any feedback will be appreciated..
|
Abhay... I had taken a Microwave to India in October.. as its cost is pretty low in dollars its generally below Rs.25000 limit.. but it drwas immediate attention of the Customs people... If you can prove that the total value of all the Electronic items you are carrying is less than 25000, you need not pay any Customs duty..

Manish, How are you giving power to microwave. generally they are of 800W or 1000W. To convert from 240 to 120V for it takes a bulky design. The general converters in market are for 25W. I also thought to bring microwave, but considering this aspect, I dropped the idea. Can you give me any information? Does that microwave work with dual voltage input?

Hey Dhum, You get 220v microwaves in US (Indian Stores ) which can be used directly in India. Its written on the box that they are not supposed to be used in US and are generally Thailand etc make!! Hey Manish, Thanks for info, I have already been to India and took help!
|
Dhumketu... the microwave I bought here in US was of 220V.. specifically made for export.. and about usage.. my parents haven't used it yet... :-) Also make sure that your microwave is not seen on Octroi Naka in Pune... though I could easily go through Customs on Mumbai Airport.. I had a lot of trouble with the Octroi people in Sangli...
