Here are the answers...
1) Yes, In USA u can get GSM phones, but India uses 900MHz frequency band and US uses 1900 MHz band so they are not compatible. But lot of companies are coming up with some thing called World Phone which can be used anywhere in the world on any GSM network. Its basically 900/1900 Mhz dual band GSM phone.
2) Buying here in US is cheaper, especially higher end models. Also u get original equipment. India madhe kahi wela fasavinyachi shakyata aste.
3) Yes in India too u can get used, second hand phone. Some dealers sale these phones, but how will u assure ki it is not gray market phone (choricha etc)..
4) Cell phone service providers in India. In every state/ market there are atleast 3 service providers. Like in Mumbai Orange (earlier Hutchison Max), BPL, Bharati (airtel) and MTNL (Dolphin) are the providers. In Pune Birla AT&T, BPL and BSNL (earlier DOT) are the providers.
5) Orange is just a brand name of company, just like here AT&T uses mLife.
6) Pricing in India is also on monthly plans. There is no funda of night and weekends etc, but the charges for Incoming and out going calls is different. In India as the charges are high, Cellphone is still luxury.
Bottomline : In India u need phone that uses 900MHz frequency. So search on internet for 900MHz phones. I think there is one model from Ericsson T39 world phone or some thing , not very sure which is, but it runs on both 900/1900 Mhz. U also need power converter for battery charger.

Problems in buying cell phone from Cellphone service provider companies like say sprint or Cingular or AT&T : Lot of companies sell the cellphones which are locked, this means these phones will run on their network only and will not useful for other networks. So u may not be able to use these phones in India.
Its better to buy phones from stores / sites such as Amazon or Ubid or such. They sale only phone without any plan or without any service. U can use these phones on any network, or in India too. Just keep in mind it has to be 900MHz range. Check the tech specs or manual for this frequency range.
Search "gsm 900mhz phones" and u will find more info.

In India, you can get cellphones on rent also. ! mee swat: ekaa prasangee asaa vaaparnaar hoto. pan, sudaivaane to prasang nibhaavalaa gelaa.
Further be ready to dial minimum 10 digits, if you want to dial any cellphone no. even in your own city. This might be a big change from US. (Strangely, I find this pattern world-wide - Japan, Europe etc. I have been told that US is still in 1st generation of cell-phones; while Europe, Japan and even India are way ahead of US. In Japan, now you can download movies on Ur cellphone. !!).
Now some information on Cellular service providers in India :-
Most of the big cities now have 4 private service providers - BPL, AT&T, Orange, Airtel etc. in addition to Govt. co.s - MTNL, BSNL.
Service of BPL of lately is deteriorating. In Pune, my friend taken BPL service first. But, whenever he used get into the area across Pune Univ. - Aundh, Dapodi, somehow the service used to get erratic even though he had countrywide roaming plan ... all sorts of messages like "out of limits", "not available" etc.
So, he swicthed to AT&T. This has happened to many of my friends in my co.
Some people have reported even billing problems with BPL; like being charged for calls not made etc.
AT&T is costly compared to BPL.
But all the private service providers now will have to cut down the prices, when BSNL start the operations.
On prices of Cellphones, I believe Singapore is the cheapest. If you are travelling via Singapore, then you can get a world cellphone at the Airport too.

yes, here also providers r making money out of selling diff. plans. But only for post paid (regular billing)cards. Every dealer will tell you different activation charges. That is not the case with prepaid cards.
Bharatat kahi diwsansathi yeNare lok prepaid pasant kartat. Ya tinhi company che rates sarkhech aahet prepaid sathi. U can purchase that card from anywhere .. agadi pan tapari walyakade suddha prepaid sims miltat ..

took my samsung R225 to india during my last visit. Works in India, make sure you get the unlock code from the service provider in US (provided for free). The cell phone ask for the unlock code as soon as you insert sim card from india.
